Ah, the bagged, red stripe version - I have one of those somewhere. This is the first incarnation - I understand it was updated in the seventies.

I'll be keen to see this built, I still have the one I made 45+ years ago.

Newish decals and PE parts to add to the general well being of the Whirlwind ;-)

Starting to scratch build some cockpit detail. I'm also using a couple of parts nicked from a Spitfire (IP and seat) as they are similar to that of the Whirlwind. They have dials and seat belts. ;-)
Also not going to use the PE parts as they relate to a later Airfix Whirlwind and not this one that came out of the Ark
It's a tad basic to say the least.

Nice start toby. I wish Airfix could make a new one, it's such an underrated aircraft.

Good one Toby, are you adding the pilotp?

The later one isn't too bad Blohm, I built one a year or two ago, a nice kit.
Cheers

No I don't do pilots. I think you can replicate metal, wood etc but human flesh is for me anyway too difficult to copy with any degree of realism so I leave all my aircraft pilotless.

Nice start, I agree with other when they say Airfix should re-tool the Whirlwind.

Putting some detail into the wing intakes and some life into the cockpit. The canopy is a right pig of a fit.

You will open the canopy?
Sometimes the talent consists exactly in that: try five dozen times when others stop at three dozen...! (F.Labelle)
I think that modeling is a subtle mix of zen philosophy and absolute crazyness - but in my case I would not dare to specify the respective percentage of each......

No. Just getting it to fit will be enough work.

The decals that came with the kit are very tired and I bought some off eBay but they aren't exactly top notch. I have tried some Microscale decal rejuvenator on them but not looking good atm. So I thought I'd go to Hannants and I got some roundels, numbers etc for the kit.
However I completely forgot I have some Special Hobby kits which I'd earmarked for sale as I don't like them and lo and behold look what I found.

No need to worry about decals or much else methinks from now on.

You know your stash is getting out of hand, when you need to have the decals that you've been searching for, and you find them already there in the stash. Pre-bought.
