Academy's 1/48th P-38 Lightning, which comes with alternative noses/parts for 4 versions.
P-38J fighter - P-38J Droopsnoot - P-38L Pathfinder - F-5E Photo-recon.

I'll be building the version in the boxart - Charles McDonald's colourful "Putt Putt Maru" P-38J fighter.

Nose parts for the fighter version are at upper left. Along the bottom are the alternatives.
L to R: Pathfinder - Photo Recon - Droopsnoot.

Kit cost £14 from 'Boyes' in Darlington
OOB - No aftermarket...
Only additions will be glue, paint, and a few airgun pellets for noseweight.

A few bits'n'bobs to clear out of the way, ready to start prompt on Saturday

Yep! That was also a significant part of my reasons for choosing this scheme.

Managed to get a little time today to get started - not a great deal yet, but FWIW, this is the latest state of play...
Started on the interior, currently half-assembled, and some detailing/weathering, etc. required.

I've also assembled the nose, and weighted it. The instructions call for 15g of extra weight - the empty nose weighs about 4g, and I've managed to pack 33 squashed .22 airgun pellets into it (26.4g), plus a little plasticine, to prevent rattling.
As you can see, a total of 34g, so that must be about 3½g of plasticine.

That'll make sure it doesn't tail-sit.

Probably won't get any time at the workbench for a couple of days now, been roped in to do a talk at a local astronomy club on tuesday - one I've not done for a while, so I need to update some of the slides, and read through my old notes a few times.

What with all this poor weather and cloud we have been having recently I have not had a chance to get the skywatcher out for a session, not even managed to get any afocal photos of the moon, still that's not a bad thing as it gives me more time sticking plastic together.

Carlos,

Good start on what looks like a lovely kit. I've only ever built the 1/72nd Academy Lightning, but that was a nice kit. I don't envy you some of the decalling, though.

Martin

Yeah, I'm not looking forward to the spinner decals - a tiny mis-align will look awful, gonna have to be very careful.

Anyhoo.... back to work on the Lightning
Got the cockpit together today, and enclosed inside the wings - The wings are full-span, single piece, upper and lower, incorporating the majority of that short fuselage - and the cockpit tub is sandwiched between.
Left to set until tomorrow.

I'll probably do a grimy wash inside, add some masking-tape harness straps, and that should do. The cockpit isn't too bad straight OOB

The kit has nice panel lines on all surfaces - should look great in silver with a pin-wash and minimal weathering.

Oh yes, very nice cockpit, I've got an Academy P-38 one in "The Stash", interesting to see how it goes together.

Cheers

Now that's what I'll call a smooth cockpit. Great work going on here.

Sorry everyone - and thanks for the positive comments, but there's no way I'm going to be able to complete this by the deadline.

Other things just seem to have ganged up to eat all of my spare time these last couple of weeks.
I'll resurrect my workbench thread with some pics when I do get time to finish it.

Apologies to all.
Karl.
