The other John's Demons - caught up with me ...

Post by JohnRatzenberger »

I was going to do a Hawker Hart, but am going to switch to one of the Hart family, the Hawker Demon, AKA the Hart Fighter.

I don't have as many different Demon kits as I do Harts, but I have enough.

I'm going to do the Airfix version, and that will probably be it. I have a very crowded, non-modeling month.

I had to open 3 baggies to find enough pieces to make one complete aircraft, although it was only the prop shaft that caused me to go into the 3rd baggie - that I could have easily scratched. I wonder if the complaint form is still good ?

Decals are of course, shot, but I have plenty of aftermarket -- it is after all, my favorite period.

I do not think I will be able to start until Thursday, it's a crowded month.

Cool! What's you opinion on the 'fabric/ribbing detail?' How does it compare to the other Demons you have?

Good choice on the Airfix Demon. Didn't Airfix modified the molds to make the Hawker Hart and end any future Demons from the mold?
On second thoughts, let's not go to Camelot. It is a silly place!

It was the other way round Chuck, the Hart mould got changed to a Demon. That's one reason the wings are so thick - they carved out all that exaggerated fabric effect. The original Hart wings were much nicer apparently! I've got the Demon, but the Hart in now pretty rare.

A retooled Hart would be really nice - it was a very widely used aircraft, and with careful design, you could get Osprey, Audax, Demons, Hectors, Hinds, Hartebeests and Harts for different boxings. Plus there are several operators, not just the RAF. Dream over :)

Cheers

But you didn't quite have the hart to do it?........ Hahahaha I kill me! :ha:

So, are you planning to attack that rib detail with a belt sander?

I have the Hart, and the wings are almost completely smooth, so much so, that I'll need to add something to simulate the ribbing. For the Demon, they added the extra fabric/ribbing effect and now its a bit too much.

I have mixed feelings about the excessive ribbing, it might be interesting to see the Hart & Demon, side-by-side, OOB(-ish) with a little card explaining the history of the molds.

I, BTW, have 3 of each - although that's really almost 3 of each as various parts are missing from one or another baggie.

In Hind-sight I never should have started this thread :)

Actually, I'm not doing the Airfix Demon. The discussion above made me take a much closer look and life is too short to waste on this.

Here are the main pieces, with Hart being either above or left of the Demon.

Image

Here's the fuselage halves (Hart on left, Demon on right), new holes for the exhausts, very subtle stitching replaced by raised lines, original low-detail Hart stringers still there.

Image

Here's the upper wing (Hart above, Demon below). They didn't even raise the center section, it still looks like the Hart, which, BTW, I don't think is too bad. Also see the various lumps and things that have been added to the Demon and the terrible job of carving out the ribbing.

Image

And here's the bottom wing, more of the same.

Image

I would be better off taking both kits, waving my hands and a sharp saw, and making a Demon from the Hart. I don't know what I am going to do at this time ....

You should make the Demon fuselage with the Hart wings and tail.

Yes, I considered that, cut the fuselage just aft of the gunner's position.

BREAK.

Anyway, I am going to drop out; my workbench time is disappearing every time I turn around and I have a review for AMPS that I really need to focus on. There seem to be enough people that I won't be missed.

Yeah. Hope you'll return to this and document your build. Sorry to see you go, but understand priorities. What are you reviewing?
Really nothing pithy to say.
