Tom's Flashing Blade
I'll be joining in with this kit from CMR:
Lots of resin, small pour stubs and very thin flash so I'm hoping that cleanup will be simple. I have a choice of markings on a few sheets so I'll make a decision on those later in the build.
Regards
Tom

Re: Tom's Flashing Blade
When I saw the title I was expecting to see a Vought Cutlass so it was a surprise to see a Scimitar. Great choice, I look forward to seeing how you get on with it.

Re: Tom's Flashing Blade
Knowing Tom I was expecting the Scimitar and this very kit - again this one also lurks in my stash though it may be going on sale as I acquired the Skybirds '86 kit from... erm, Tom!

Re: Tom's Flashing Blade
Nice choice Tom, it's one a/c I would like to build.
I actually watched the last ever flying Scimitar land at Yeovilton and true to form it had to make an emergency landing as he only had two greens and had to take the arrester wire right in front of our Squadron, he took the wire first time and his starboard u/c partly collapsed leaving the a/c supported on its drop tank.
The a/c was being flow in to be exhibited in the museum so they just jacked it up lowered its gear fully and rolled it into the museum.

My work bench is starting to look like Portsmouth Naval Dockyard.

I hope to do her justice Alan, its stories like this that add the little something extra to modelling for me.
So getting started this morning (only one day late ) I thought it best to find and prep all the parts that would be going inside the fuselage first (obvious I know, but we've all forgotten a piece at some point). This is my first attempt at an all resin kit so I hope to avoid getting any appendages CA'd to the airframe and plan to learn some new techniques along the way.
A quick 20 minutes later and I had the first group of bits ready and drying:
The eagle eyed amongst you will notice the missing tip on one fuselage half. This had unfortunately snapped in storage but was thankfully still in the bag, it's a clean break too so shouldn't be too much of an issue to get re-attached.
As soon as things were dry enough I couldn't resist beginning a bit of assembly, so I cracked on with fitting out the interior of the fuselage. I added a few .177 air rifle rounds to the nose to guarantee all three wheels touch the ground and it feels about right:
And then things sort of snowballed and I got a bit carried away:
The snapped tail is sorted too:
I'm stopping at this point to let all the CA harden fully then I'll have a sanding session to smooth it all out before the wings go on, probably around Tuesday
Regards
Tom

Good start, Tom.
I hope to learn some tips for tackling resin kits from you.

Looks great Tom. The Scimitar is a very attractive aircraft that you don't see modelled often so I'm going to be following this build with interest.

Nice one Tom, I have the Xtrakit version but I don't think a GB would give me enough time.

Re: Tom's Flashing Blade
Thanks guys this is a real lovely kit to put together, no horribly warped or misshapen parts, no difficult to remove pour stubs and no covering of flash on every part.
As a result I've made even more rapid progress than I was expecting :
Spine, tail, elevators and intakes all fitted. I've sprayed the insides of the intakes in Gloss White and made sure the splitter plates are properly located as well:
Main wings to go on tonight and then it'll be another session of tidying up the general airframe ready for paint.
Regards
Tom

Re: Tom's Flashing Blade
Thanks Chip It really is a lovely kit, the newer version from CMR is a lot more accurate in outline but this is close enough for the uninitiated and at £20 second hand is a heck of a lot cheaper than the new one at £80
Progress update:
Yep wings are on and the basic airframe is complete, next up is the paint
Regards

Re: Tom's Flashing Blade
According to "Thunder&Lightnings" the worse parts are the nose and canopy. It also points to this handy build/review http://www.freewebs.com/aeroscale/scimitar.htm;
Anyway this build is shaping up nicely, and though basic the kit is going together well which is sometimes just what you want.
