Assembly, aided by Legos ....

Image

A bit of join to clean, plus some glue drop smutz on one tailplane.

I have no idea what I was drinking when I said (above) this is an FM-1 with only 4 guns - even the sprue shot shows 6 shell chutes.

Putting on primer, going to try the Vallejo Surface Primer to see how it works, brushed on - looks like two coats needed.

Will be in meetings for 2 days, so not much will happen until Wednesday.

No pix, but the Vallejo grey primer took in two coats and the Sea Gray has been painted on the underside.

I'll start on the topside tomorrow.

Aaaarrrggh !

Image

Half way into painting the pattern and I realized the profile or plan view on the Xtradecal sheet had colors reversed. The problem is the plan view is on one side of the page and the profile on the other. I did the wings & tail then turned it over to do the fuselage and realized something was wrong.

I don't know how I'm going to correct this - which color to repaint - and I don't know if I have the time before GB end. I'll look at it in the morning ....

Aaaarrrggh ! Yes I should have checked ....

Finish it as it is. It will not look out of place because firstly, it is quite possible, if not probable that US built aircraft were delivered in the same A and B schemes that British built types were, ie: mirroring one and other, and secondly: Xtradecal will most likely have been working from black and white photographs in which Extra Dark Sea Grey and Dark Slate Grey are notoriously difficult to tell which is which. What I am saying is that nobody can be sure that your model is wrong.

Oh, no - it is most definitely wrong - I didn't mean A & B reversal, I meant the wings (plan view) are in one pattern and that does not match the fuselage (profile) view - i.e. the green on the wings meets the earth on the fuselage !! My photo doesn't really show the problem.

Otherwise, you are right, I simply would not worry about it ....

I am going down to look at what I can do shortly.

Personally, I thought it looked quite good. You gotta love Wildcats (or Martlets) in FAA markings.

If it is any consolation, you aren't the first person to do this, and I got out of it the same way, total respray of base coat followed by second colour on top.

I am sure it will turn out fine in the end.

Repainted ....

Image

This time I followed the fuselage pattern first, then translated that to the wing & tail.

Image

I have a bunch of touch up to do on the underside .... I think I was more annoyed than careful :(

Really tight now - hopefully I can touch-up and Future tomorrow and get decals on Sunday, that would leave me Monday for little things .... but I don't know, I have a lot to do this weekend.
