Chip's "Ace" build...F4U Corsair.***Finished***

Post by Molly-new »

Continuing my plan to build as many of my Airfix "WWII Aircraft of the Aces" collection as possible, the next build will be the Vought F4U Corsair:

Image

Lieutenant Ira C. Kepford joined US Navy Fighter Squadron 17 (VF-17) aboard the USS Bunker Hill in January 1943, and went on to become the unit's highest scoring ace with 16 victories. He flew two similarly marked F4U-1A's coded "29", the one featured in this kit being the later one, and carries his victory markings on both sides.

Aha! 10000 Airfix rivets flying in close formation. Looking forward to seeing how this one goes together.

Martin

It is so that you can build them in the dark. :-D

Not too many parts on this one:

I did not realise that it had such an unusual paint scheme underneath:

I have made a start by sorting out the numerous sink marks that are on it:

The tape is to protect the rivets during filling/sanding, and NO, I will NOT be rescribing it, I do not have the two years spare to do it. :ha:

I built the re-issue boxing, and I quite liked it. It didn't have much detail obviously, but the bombs included are good and overall once finished it looks good. Apart from the terrifying canopy...

Did Airfix mould the frame of the sliding bit of the canopy as part of the fuselage? It kind of looks like that to me.

I remember making this one when I were 'but a kiddie back in nineteen oatcake

Mmmmmm.......Oatcakes. :-D

The canopy fits fine on this, it is the fuselage that would not line up properly. Nothing that a touch of filler cannot put right:

Next conundrum is whether to replace the top rivets that will be lost in sanding, or remove all the rivets.

As the Corsair was noticeably smooth, I think that removing the rivets would be the way to go.

I normally remove it as soon as the filler is on, but left it in this instance to protect the rivets during sanding, just in case I decide to reinstate them. ;-)

Having removed all the rivets on the P38 H Lightening that I built recently, I have decided to re-instate them on this build as they are not as prominent. To do this I started by using masking tape to mark out where the rivets should be:

Image

Filler was then applied over the top, and left to dry with the tape still in place:

Image

Once dry (24 Hours) the filler was sanded back carefully to the tape:

Image

Once the tape was removed I was left with filler "strips" that at this scale (and under a coat of paint) should represent the missing detail quite nicely.
