August and son build a Nichimo - FINISHED

Post by K5083 »

My son Alex decided to join this GB. We are building a Nichimo 1/70 Spitfire 5B.

Not sure when I acquired this fine kit, with petite raised surface detail, retracting landing gear and movable ailerons.

Our only building tools were an #11 blade and some CA. Or, if you're ten years old and obsessed with Lego, a Sword of Exact Zero and a Kragle. Anyway, in less than an hour we had it to this point:

It was then turned over to Dad for painting. Alex has chosen a USAAF scheme with grey/green camo. Got the Ocean Grey on so far.

Never seen that kit before August, Alex, -thought I knew all the early spitfires, thought I had built all the early Spitfires! The ball joint stand is interesting and presumably pre-dates the Matchbox stands?

Even Scalemates has not heard of this kit so I don't know much about it. The moving part fad was an early sixties thing. The stand is quite complex, it even comes with a metal wire ring that holds it together somehow. Alex is not interested in the stand so I haven't built it. The only instructions for the kit are an exploded view drawing so the assembly sequence for the stand is not that clear. I don't know what that triangular piece with the hole in it does.

I think I've maybe seen one of these on eBay once or twice, but never looked at them!

Painting came along steadily this week and it is now about ready for decals. This has been the most trouble-free paint job of the three Spits I am doing.

This will be the first of my Spits to be finished. Just needs a clear coat tonight. We chose Don Gentile's markings from an old ProModeler decal sheet. Decal performance was generally good although the codes responded to Future better than the roundels.

And we're done! Junior likes his new Spitfire and who knows, with a 109 GB coming up this summer, maybe it will soon have an opponent.

That's turned out well. Nice to see a lesser known kit getting built.
