Daz's Warbird Spit **FINISHED**

Post by DazDaMan »

I decided to add this one to the build pile in case I don't finish the Spitfire Mk.II - I haven't touched it in a couple of weeks, so I'm thinking this will be the case!

However, I can throw one of these wee guys together in a couple of days, so....!!

Image

The subject of this build will be Spitfire XVI RW382:
Image
RW382 was the first Spitfire to be restored to flying condition, in 1991, by Historic Flying Ltd, who are pretty much the premiere Spitfire restorers in the world these days! The aircraft flew for a few years in the UK before being shipped to California for its then-owner, warbird collector and restaurant tycoon David Tallichet (who also owned the B-17G modified to look like the Memphis Belle). Later sold to a new owner, the aircraft fatally crashed into a hillside in bad weather. Despite being badly damaged, there was plenty material to constitute a complete restoration to flying condition, which was duly completed last year, albeit to "high-back" configuration. The aircraft is currently based at Biggin Hill.

The codes on the boxart:

I'm wondering how this will turn out.

This kit is a brilliant build Daren and just falls together, the tailwheel is a little chunky, the top cowling is slightly too flat but is easily corrected with a thin wipe of filler, the lower cowl and the radiators are too deep but can be easily reduced in a number of ways and the canopy is a little too large but is thick enough to file down however if you have the spare canopy from the Airix mk.22 kit this fits perfectly.
Despite all that it looks just fine when built OOB

David

It's one of my favourite kits - if not THE favourite - and I've built so many of them I could almost do them blindfolded (though probably not a good idea!).

This will be an OOB build - except for the decals.

Be finished by the weekend! :-D

Nice project. That aerial shot is now my computer background.

Black plastic, that seems odd.

Looking good so far.

I have built this kit moulded (at different times and under different marques) in three different shades of grey, in silver and in black.

Nice, isn't it? It's been mine at various times - both at work and at home. There's a slightly different version kicking about, too.

I've seen the kit moulded in black, grey and silver - the silver version went together flawlessly!

Decals going on...

They're all spares box jobs. The codes are a little over-sized, as the smaller option I had wasn't the right shape. The slightly larger version was more correct - and looks fine to me!

The 1/72 scale serial numbers weren't half as bad to apply as I thought they would be!

Terrific! It is great to see nice jobs being done with that fine kit.
