Thanks Toby.
Actually, I think it was a lack of alcohol that caused the double posting.
I'll be certain not to make that mistake again

She is looking great Dazzled. Worth the extra effort you are putting into it.

A quick question:
Do you have any pictures of these and were they common to all versions?Dazzled wrote:

Hi OT
The panels were news, even to me. They are small panels just in front of the wing fences and have the technical name of "leading edge suppressed aerials". They are present on most Mig-21s up to the 4th gen machines. They're mostly rectangular but some are three-sided .
And the kicker....some are painted over.
I had a look on Google images and it looks like the East German AF painted theirs.

Re: Dazzled's 2nd Gen Export
I finally got to the stage where I could get some paint on. In this case I decided to go for some Tamiya cockpit green. It's quite close to real a/c primer and it'll provide a good base for the rest of the paint, plus it's light enough to allow some pre-shading (look at me getting all posh )
The problem with a primer coat though is that it shows up flaws.
For starters the windscreen fit wasn't anywhere near as good as it looked in bare plastic and needed a bit more work.
The primer also uncovered some issues with the seam along the spine.
I added a bead of Mr Surfacer, bearing in mind a recent magazine article about using it to "fill without sanding".
It needed sanding
Then I applied another coat of primer, remembering first to barf turquoise around the windscreen.
In fact I primed everything I'll need to paint.
But....
I still need to do some more work on that spine seam and a small gap has become apparent on the other side of the windscreen. These things are sent to try us .
So, another round of tweaking will be in order, followed by more primer.
I don't think I'll get this model finished before the end of the month but, in all honesty, I didn't expect to finish it in time. In fact, I didn't expect to get to this stage within the time constraints.
More updates soon, I hope.

You're making great progress with this Darryl. It's surprising what primer shows up when it comes to seams that look fine in naked plastic. Still, that's part of the primer's job and it will be worth it in the end!

Your Mig is looking like a real beauty. I can't wait until they release them in 1/72 scale.

Re: Dazzled's 2nd Gen Export
Thanks guys
And, despite spending 8 hours working on my OU assignment today I still managed a bit of time at the bench.
I needed it for the sake of my fragile sanity
Just some little things.
First I drilled some holes in the missiles and gave them a coat of matt white from a rattle can, just to give them a suitable base for paint.
And then...... I pre-shaded the whole model and got some paint on the underside.
The paint is Tamiya XF-23 with 10%ish matt white added. It gives a faded look, and a spray at low pressure gave a nice thin coat. Those little paint pots you get with Airfix gift sets are useful for something
And I didn't forget the doors and control surfaces either That makes a change.
I'll take another look tomorrow and see if I want to go for another coat.

This is coming on very well Darryl and the pre-shaded underside work looks excellent

Re: Dazzled's 2nd Gen Export
Well, I did put on another light coat but circumstances have conspired to keep me away form the bench for a few days.
It's no big deal as I didn't think I'd even get as far as the paint stage within a month because of other commitments off the bench.
I'll finish the Mig off in my Big Mig thread in the aviation section.

Some you win some you lose Darryl, but you've done some excellent work with this kit. I'll make a mental note to look out for it in the av section.
