Lancfan's XR220 build - *** DNF ***
Re: Lancfan's XR220 build.
I don't remember putting nose weight into either of my 1/72nd TSR's. I think although there is a lot of aircraft towards the rear, there is also a lot of fuselage in front of the main wheels, normally that's enough to keep it level!.

Re: Lancfan's XR220 build.
Mark, looking at it there is a lot more plastic in front of the main legs than behind them but I just did not give it any thought and simply decided "nose wheel undercarriage = nose weight" as would usually be the case.

Re: Lancfan's XR220 build.
It's just a basic rule I have used in the past, the main wheels are, or are not far from, the centre of gravity. Although the tail assembly usually has something to say about this, if there is more than 50% of the aircraft behind the main wheels it may well be a tail sitter. It's all to do with CofG!!

Re: Lancfan's XR220 build.
Mark, my rule of thumb is that if it has a nose wheel it gets weight shoved in it's front end and I did not look at the proportions of the model at all. In this instance the main legs are close enough to the tail and far enough from the nose to allow this to be built without weight but I did not study the layout of the model I just used my rule of thumb out of habit- better safe than sorry.

Re: Lancfan's XR220 build.
For those that are worrying that they are too late, neither of the Airfix TSR2 kits needs nose weight. In both 1/72 and 1/48 the model shows no willingness to tail sit at all.

Re: Lancfan's XR220 build.
I have been absent much of the time during the last few days due to a rush of blood to the head resulting in a full clean up and reorganisation of my modelling room and the addition of another worktable, doubling my bench space, now- back to work.
The wheelbays have been detailed as needed following pictures of the full size XR220, with one side fully detailed for display opened up and the other side modelled with the doors closed as they would have been when the aircraft was new.
The fuselage has been buttoned up and left to dry.

That's looking good!
Best wishes

Re: Lancfan's XR220 build.
Cheers iggie. The next part to fit was the lower panel, this part is a straight and true fit up to the front of the bomb bay but can be troublesome forward of that, to avoid putting the nose out of true I have cut off the front portion forward of the bomb bay to be fitted separately. The main picture shows the foreshortened lower panel (part 34) in place.

Re: Lancfan's XR220 build.
After fitting mine I realised the best thing to do is to taper the front section so that the width of the end is reduced by about 1mm.

Re: Lancfan's XR220 build.
Which is what I did to my first TSR-2 on the Sci-Fi GB- I decided to separate the front bit first on this one- it will be easier when dry fitting it without the rest of part 34 in the way.

Re: Lancfan's XR220 build.
XR220 is displayed with covered tailpipes so whilst Waiting for glue to dry I have worked this up on PSP to print out to size for my model.

Re: Lancfan's XR220 build.
Life has got in the way of things lately but this is the current state, The air intakes have been assembled and fitted, the nose wheel bay has been detailed and nose leg fitted and work has begun on the test gear in the bomb bay.

The wings have been thinned down to fit the decking line of the fuselage and the halves joined together.
