Chip's "Ace" build...'Pips' Butcher Bird.

Post by Molly-new »

Continuing my plan to build as many of my Airfix "WWII Aircraft of the Aces" collection as possible, the latest build will be the FW 190A as flown by Oberstleutenant Josef 'Pips' Priller.

I've never seen the original airfix Fw-190A built before, so I will watch with interest.

It is quite a basic kit, but apart from the raised panel lines it is quite accurate in outline. Here are the parts:

And the paint guide:

Old school HU paint codes so I will have to try and convert them to RLM numbers.

I tried to find a link I had that gave the correct RLM numbers for Humbrol but sadly can't find it.
Looks a nice little kit.

I've built a few of these. It is a nice kit and goes together without too much trouble.

Made a start today by assembling the wings, attaching the seat to one side of the fuselage, and splashed a bit of Revell 75 Panzergrau around the cockpit area:

Apart from the seat there is no detailing in the cockpit, but once Joseph is in his seat and the canopy is on I doubt if much would be visible anyway.

Joseph has had a paint job as well, and will get a wash prior to being fitted in place and the fuselage joined up.

Fuselage went together neatly with the only flaw being this small gap on the parcel shelf behind the seat:

Rather than try to fill and sand it I am going to glue a thin piece of plastic card over it and paint it.

Out of curiosity, is this the same type that "Pips" Priller flew over the D-day beaches?

According to Wikki: Jagdgeschwader 26's first operations during the Normandy invasion on 6 June 1944 was conducted by Geschwaderkommodore Obstlt. Josef Priller, flying an Fw 190A-8 W.Nr.170346 Black 13, and his wingman from his airfield at Lille-Nord; an event that would be portrayed graphically in the book by Cornelius Ryan and the resultant film The Longest Day.

Looking good so far
Seems to go together very smoothly. Pretty good for a vintage Airfix!

Nice progress! I've got this in a different boxing, it's nice to see that it goes together well
Best wishes
