VV's 190 A-8......or A-9.

Post by VickersVandal »

I'll be building the Airfix 1/72 A-8. While I like the decal option given, I really am not a fan of camo, and especially not a fan of attempting a convincing mottle without an airbrush. I also don't like building the same scheme as everyone else out there (I'm such a hipster   )

I'm leaning towards building the A-9 "blue 7" instead:

The differences between the A8 and 9 are minor and negligible in 1/72 scale from what I can tell.

I do need some help though. Can anyone tell me whether the aircraft would be white or extremely light grey and whether the upper wings would be the same colour as the rest of the aircraft? I only really have side profiles to go by.

I remember finding something very similar to Blue 7, and the wings were white as far as I could tell.

And from your image, it looks like a very light grey underside with a pure white top.

Looking forward to seeing this built.

Its my opinion that when you use white in this scale [1/72] it tends to look too bright. I usually go with a light gray. Sometimes I'll even lighten that up to achieve the right look. In the rare case I do use white I tone it down with a flat and some weathering.

BlohmWolf old lad, I think the grey underside is likely to just be a shadow effect. If you look at the gear bay doors they appear the same colour as the upper fuselage. Thanks for the tip on the wings - I reckon you're right.

Thanks for the advice DP. I plan to weather the bejangles out of it, so I'll probably go with a very flat white and then filthy it up.

Oh goody, I like a dirty bird. ;-)

And I like your choice of colour scheme, very unusual.

I await your creation with much interest. Looks to be unusual and very different. Good choice.

I have used the US SEA grey for white on builds. The under surface color. Kind of off white.

Thanks all. Glad there's some enthusiasm for this scheme.

So, being antipodean, I get the drop on you lot again :ha:

While I wait for paint to dry on my sci fi GB, I thought I'd get a start on this.
First very rough coat of cockpit black-grey laid down:

Good start. What paint is in the unrecognizable jar?

Ok, so I've managed to put some time into this again.

Bodged together some tape seat belts.

I've taken a leaf out of TobyC's book  and added a splash of colour so that the white looks more like the overspray that it was on the real thing and I can do a little bit of paint chipping. I think I'll also put the insignias on, as the artwork for this scheme shows them standing out very slightly under the white.

It looks appalling because acrylics brush paint so terribly, but I doubt that will show through the over spray.

I found that the front section of the cowling was oversized in diameter and had to be sanded back pretty harshly to blend with the rest of the cowling. Has anyone else encountered this with the new tool?

Finally managed to get an all over coat of white on. No picture, but see how it looked before? Ok, now imagine that in white....

Great bit of weathering. Like the chips on the wing stubs something I forgot to do
