Daz's Ace Spitfire build! **FINISHED**

Post by DazDaMan »

For my second Spit, I'm going strictly OOB with the Airfix Spitfire IX:

I've heard some good things about this wee kit, so I'm looking forward to putting this one together!

The kit decals include W/C J E "Johnny" Johnson's Mk.IX MK392. I had intended on building a model of a surviving Spitfire IX, but I discovered that it would need some new decals.

I may yet add another Spit to the group....!

Well, despite a few missing photos of the build, I finished this one at last!

The stripes were a nightmare - I had to repaint them a couple of times in order to get them to look even half-right, but I reckon they came out OK in the end.

Lovely kit, though. Shame the cockpit was bare, but the rest of it turned out really nicely. In fact, I got another one just so I could finally use the decals for the Battle of Britain movie Spitfire!

Looks very good. Odd how it's difficult not to like a Spit especially one as well made as yours.

Good man! I've got another couple as well! I know that the thing has a minimalist cockpit and no detail in the wheel wells, but:

1) It's not beyond me to add what I consider necessary;
2) The omissions are not obvious at scale distance sitting on a youngster's shelf;
3) It builds into a pretty accurate replica out of the box; and
4) It's an easy build.

I like the detail in more recent Airfix releases (eg Typhoon, FW190, etc.) but the parts count has gone up and they are more involved builds. This one definitely catches the spirit of Airfix in its heyday. Also, if I was a newcomer to the hobby, I know which one I'd wish to start with . . . [sticks head back beneath parapet].

Martin

That has turned out very well Daren. This kit would appear to give a decent enough basic canvas to satisfy most modellers. It certainly looks enough like a Mk IX to me.
Doing - Tamiya 1/35th Universal Carrier.

This is a great model and you have really done it justice, Airfix certainly got it right when they tooled this one.
