AE Build1: Airfix/MPC BF 109E4 1/24 Von Werra*COMPLETE*

Airfix (in MPC boxing) BF 109E3/4

The subject of this build is the Airfix 1/24 kit of the 109E, and older kit that had some prelim painting done by the pervious owner. It was not too bad so I don't have to clean the paint off by I will just go over it. I think all the parts are here but time will tell! The decals may have been useable but I didn't trust them and replaced them with a Tecmod set that includes painting masks.

I picked Von Werra's plane as he had a most interesting career. An early war ace he was shot down over Britain and managed to escape three times while in the UK, in 1941 he was shipped to Canada and jumped out of a moving train in zero degree weather and much snow on the ground and managed to cross the saint lawrence river and make his way to the USA, and from there into Mexico, south America, Portugal, Spain and then Germany.

He was the first German to complete the 'home run' of getting home after an escape, but worse for the British he was a highly intelligent officer who took careful observations of British interigation methods of which the Germans had no idea. This was devastating for future captures, and the germans themselves copied many of the British tactics.

Von Werra would be killed flying over the North Sea shortly after his marriage in late 1941.

A parts check shows everything seems to be here, some parts have been painted and a few minor parts assembled.
Image

The prop is repainted and assembled
Image

The engine is built and prop attached, and painted gunmetal
Image

The cockpit is built next and painted, it has some nice detail but the pilot will hide a lot of it, so no need to be super detailed here
Image
Image

Because painting was needed, I should have airbrushed it in retrospect
Image

A start is made to Von Werra, I was tired at this point and shut down for the day

VonWerra is finished painting

He is attached to the cockpit with white glue

The prop cap is painted in black/white as per Von Werra's plane, and all the built parts thus far are installed in the starboard fuselage half

Its looking good, I'm still building the 1/24 Spitfire so I can appreciate the work you have had to put into this build.

I built the 1/24th Spitfire years ago, but never finished my '109 (it was subsequently lost in a house move!).

Will watch this one with interest! :)

The supply of German paint colors I needed has arrived so I can get back to work, the wheels are painted and assembled.
Image

One of the cannon covers was missing so I made one out of squadron green stuff covered by testor's putty
Image

The cockpit had another problem, the instrument panel cover was missing, so I improvised, and the guns are added and the fuselage joined
Image

The wheels are supposed to retract but the plastic was so old and brittle the joint snapped and it was extremely difficult to get the wheels at the correct angle. The wings were added as this helped but there are huge cracks on upper and lower that will require a lot of putty after all this dries, I'm giving it 24 hours as it has to be strong

All the 109s get some white paint on them.
Image

The nose panels just would not fit with the guns attached, so I ripped them out and glued down the panels. I had no choice as the kit was poorly engineered.

Just as I neared the end the doorbell rang and I flinched, messing up the rear and now I have to repaint the blue, this time I will mask it like I should have done from the start.
