OT's Yellow Nosed Emil *** Finished ***

Post by Old_Tonto »

My entry for this group build will be this 1/72 Tamiya kit:

Image

Sprue shots etc. Everything contained on a single sprue apart from the canopy:

The usual clear instructions:

A lovely stand & decals:

Image

I built this E-3 version a few years ago for a Blitzbau & I recall it is a pretty good fit all round.

Image

I have read that the fuselage is 2mm too short, making it 'Unbuildable' for those JMN :fuhrer: idiots.
What is more important to me is a pleasurable build that looks like a 109.

I am not sure which scheme to go for. One is stippled which I think I can do with a brush. My preferred one is the mottled patter but I have never done mottling with an airbrush before! :???:

Now can anyone recommend a paint that accurately represents that deep yellow colour that the Luftwaffe used?

I use the Vallejo model air RLM 04. I spray orange or red beforehand as it gives the yellow a much deeper lustre.
There is a mottling mask available from Hannants that should help.

Nice choice OT, I considered making a Tamiya in 1/48 but I have enough with the other four for now!

I use RLM 04 from Xtracrylix. I have one of those mottle masks but have yet to use it in anger. Looks good when I tried it on paper.

Thanks for the colour call out. I will have to get some ASAP. That stencil looks pretty cool but I don't plan on doing any more mottling any time soon so is probably not worth it.

I hope to get started on the build tonight.

You can make your own mottle stencil out of stiff cardboard, I did this over a year ago and its still works fine.

Its actually very simple. Draw with a pencil the shapes you want to cut out on the cardboard, then take a sharp hobby knife and cut the shapes out of the cardboard! It will take you about an hour or so but you can do many patterns and you can paint over the cardboard all you like, in fact the dried paint makes it stronger!

Since its relatively light you can easily hold the template over the model while spraying without much problem.

You can even use writing paper and this can bend to do areas near wing to fuselage joints and it works, because I do it all the time!

Nice idea Chris I will give that a try. I assume that you hold the template a little distance off the surface to obtain a lightly feathered effect?

Started work on the cockpit last night.

Beautiful kit O-T. I built the 1/48 E-4 and it fell together. Good Luck. I alway have liked the "Black 8" scheme.

Of course.

You can make it close for tighter effects, lots of ways to do it, and since its just card board or paper its next to nothing to replace or change.

I managed an hour at the bench this weekend. Fortunately this kit fits so well that I made fast progress.
I painted the interior then dry-brushed a few details:

Image

Not much will be seen anyway one the canopy is attached. The 109 tub makes the Spitfire look spacious.

The IP decal settled down well with a soak in Microsol.

Image

Then it just fell together!.

Image

A little filler at the seems should sort out any gaps.
I will leave the cowl upper & lower covers separate for now just to make it easier to paint them yellow.
The tail rudder too, they have all had an undercoat of white primer.

More to follow.

I leave off some parts also for ease of painting.

Apologies guys. No progress so far as I have been full of cold for the last week.

Will get back at this tonight though.

This is where I got up to last night.

Image

The canopy was a perfect fit. I still had to fit it twice as I forgot to add the head armour the first time round.

I then masked the canopy with Tamiya tape & Maskol for the front side windows as they are an awkward shape.
Engine panels, exhaust & rudder were primed in white then I used Revell aqua color gelb just thined with distilled water. Several thin coats.
They need cleaning up a bit but I am very happy with it. Captures the orange tinge to the yellow quite nicely. I might dry-brush a little yellow over the edges once assembled to simulate wear.

I have also added the tail planes, yet again a great fit. I left off the supports until after painting.

Tonight I aim to get the canopy framing painted & then a coat of primer sprayed on. Whilst that dries I will work on the smaller pieces & U\C.
Not sure in which order to do the colours yet though!

More to follow soon hopefully.
