Re: KP Avia S-199
I've decided that this one will be in Czech colours. I have another, for another time, to do in Israeli colours.

This is turning into a real gem. The brass tube for cannon barrels is a big improvement.

Re: KP Avia S-199
After a couple of colour coats. Tradition has it these were painted RLM02 but an expert says 'not so. it was RAL6013'. So I went through all my references and charts and chips and............. RAL6013 is one of the shades of RLM02. RLM02 has a few shades, I have about 4 in references, and 6013 is the same as one of them. So this got Model Master RLM02.
The wings have had two coats, I need to give the fuselage, from the canopy back to infront of the tail plane another coat. Its a bit patchy. The bulged hood on this was a sliding one so I scribed the lines for the runners on the fuselage. I used superglue to stick the canopy on. For those who don't know; a canopy coated with Klear is unlikely to fog up by superglue. I also used superglue/talc to fill in around the canopy. I had the devil of a job getting that smoothed down and neat looking.
I did something I usually do. I often read people advising never to put acrylics over enamels and that sort of thing, otherwise it'll ruin the paint job.
My Model Master paint [enamel] was still tacky after overnight drying, so today I gave it two coats of Klear [acrylic]; result ? dry paint and no reaction. I do this frequently and have never had a problem.

Looking good, Fred.
It always intigued me why Messerschmitt never designed the '109 with a sliding canopy in the first place!!

Re: KP Avia S-199
Good question Daz. But I have read that a lot of pilots preferred to crashland if they had to rather than take to the silk, as the 109 was a tough kite to bail out of. Erich Hartmann was shot down six times and rode his 109 down to the ground every time, and he survived the war.

Re: KP Avia S-199
It was hard to bail out of because it was hard to open the canopy against the slip-stream. Some 109s, but not all, appear to have had some sort of release so that the hood and the rear part would separate from the airframe. I can find no reference to any sort of hood release, but many photos of crashed 109s show the two parts missing.
Willi M even put a side opening canopy on his 262 despite requests for a sliding one from pilots and the RLM.

The Buchon certainly has a hood release system - John Romain described it in an article on flying the beast from a few years ago.

Re: KP Avia S-199
All done now;
The decals are from a set by Tally-Ho. The main wheels came from a Hasagawa G6, the drop tank came from the general 109 spares box. A vac canopy by Pavla, I think you can see how clear it is. And the aerial wire came from Head of Fred, one of my grey hairs - I reckoned I could spare one.

Looks really good. I think the single colour is enhanced by the brightness of the markings.
