Splash's Whirlwind HAS9

Post by splash »

My cunning plan is to convert the Italeri H-19B to a Westland Whirlwind HAS9, the main changes are replacing the nose with a new resin nose and modifying the underside to add a bomb bay.

As you can see the kit has nice detail and from past experience builds well.

Doing a conversion job? I can not believe that you don't have a Whirlwind HAS9 in that monster stash of yours.

When people have complained about the panel lines on Airfix kits of late I'm always reminded the trenches Revell employed on their helo kits (Whirlwind, Wessex and Chinook). I've no idea why they thought it necessary to differentiate to such a degree the removable panels. The raised detail around the windows is also OTT. Other than that they do appear to be excellent kits and I think I have the same conversion as well as two the straight and and bent boom versions of the whirlwind. I'm sure you'll knock out some great models.

I agree with you James some of the panel lines and the raised detail around the windows are OTT but overall they are nice kits.

I have spotted something that will need sorting, the windscreen on the early H-19 they had a split windscreen in three places but the Westland a/c had only a central split and internal bracing. the kits windscreen is moulded with the three frames and I'm not looking forward to attempting to remove the two outboard frames as the plastic is thin and brittle and will need a lot of polishing out.

This was what my last attempt at building the kit looked like, as you can see I did not know about the windscreen issue when I build it and the panel lines once toned down don't look to bad.

Just wondering, Splash, if the nose gear might not need to be compressed slightly to depict the weight of the engine directly above them?
Please critique my posts honestly i.e. say what you think so I can learn and improve...

It's a bit of a tail sitter so I think in the photo it was light on the front wheels, but you are right it does look toooooo long in the legs, so I will keep an eye on them with this build.

Off with the old nose on with the new, Airwaves have done a nice job on the nose it's going to fit with very little filler.

My next job is to remove the old cooling grills on both sides.

The grills came off with no difficulties, the plastic Italari use is easy to work with as its not to brittle.

I have just order a copy of Scale Aircraft Modelling oct 1987 edition that has plans for the Whirlwind, with luck it will show me details of the underside.

That'll look really smart when it's done. And that a nice looking bit of resin.

When you compare this kit with the old Airfix version you can see the progress kit manufactures have made over the years.

The cockpit on this kit is nicely detailed even down to creases in the seat cushions.

As James said manufacturers some times over do panel lines and the raised lines around the windows, so I have removed them, the image below show above before and after.

I agree its worth doing.

The nose fitted with ease which came as a pleasant surprise.

How did you make such a good job of removing the window frames? cut and sand or just sand? I would be afraid of making a massive mess!
