René Fonck's Spad XIII
My build will be the Glencoe re-issue of the old Aurora Spad XIII as flown by René Fonck, the allied all time ace of aces. He had 75 confirmed kills but also 52 additional unconfirmed kills, a truly remarkable score. Fonck's personality tended to be somewhat shy and aloof so he over compensated by bragging a bit much for the taste of the French and never captured the imagination of France the way guynemer did.
René Fonck was accused after WWII of colaberation with the Nazis but it was proven he had in fact been a member of the resistance and had the witnesses and documents to prove it.

Excellent. I have a soft spot for those old WWI Auroras. Several of them were terrific kits.

Nice choice! Fonck always seems to be overlooked among the aces.

Is this the old kit which has the markings outlined on the wings?
I have the Testors issue. Its still a nice simple kit.

Al speling misteaks aer all mi own werk..
Its not just how good your painting is, its how good the touch-ups are too.

Its an old Aurora molding, when Glencoe gets them its part of their deal that they clean them up and remove the molded markings.fredk wrote:Is this the old kit which has the markings outlined on the wings?

Testors is the old Hawk kit.

Cool
It's very rude of life to get in the way of modelling, hey.

Is this the 5-color scheme ?
What paint colors do they give ?

Its rather confusing, I'll have to get better colors from the net, the Glencoe sheet is rather poorly printed with only guestment colors like 'dark green' and such.jRatz wrote:Is this the 5-color scheme ?

I'm thinking a chocolate brown, French khaki green, tan and USdark green on the upper surface with cream undersides.

Re: René Fonck's Spad XIII
This question just came up on a WW1 list-serv I lurk on, here are some thoughts, using ModelMaster enamels, but don't you use acrylics ? MM may have a cross-ref between their enamel & acrylic lines ...
Beige = Light Tan 1170 or Flat Tan 1167
Chocolate = Military Brown 1701 or British Dark Earth or Russian Earth Brown
Lt Green = Pale Green 1716 (?)
Dk Green = Dark Green 1710
"Ecru" (underside) = Sand 1706? Radome Tan 1709?
And another guy who mixed MM enamels as follows although I have no idea how he got to the FS numbers, he didn't supply portions.
Dark green: Dark Green FS 34079, mixed to FS 34083
Light green: Medium Green FS 34102- used as is
Sand/beige: Armor Sand FS 30277 mixed to FS 23448
Brown: Military Brown FS 30117 mixed to FS 20140
Underside ecru: Armor sand FS 30277 mixed to FS 36555
IPMS Stockholm may have other suggestions, probably also enamel.
I use Mr.Kit acrylics for WW1, but unless you've got someone local, you don't get them quickly.
HTH, I really know nothing about French aircraft colors, wonder if they are the same as armor (except for the underside )

Re: René Fonck's Spad XIII
I pretty good with frenchie colors, French aircraft are a personal favorite of mine due to the fancy colors and weird looking planes.
If I was the lazy type I could have made Guynemer's plane, all bluff cream!
