Daz's Scout Experimental 5a **DNF**

A World War One GB - any subject, any scale, 1914-1918 - this is not a 1914-specific GB.
Runs 6 weeks, July 28th to September 8th, to allow plenty of time for biplanes, rigging, and holidays.

I have only done one and that was the Airfix "old" Swordfish and that was rigged after construction using the "non-hole" method and E-Z line. Decals first. :ha: It happens. But to answer your question, yes, in most cases it is better.

I will scan and upload the instructions on phototbucket and unto this site. In the AM that is as the sheet is at home.

The problem with fishing line is that it doesn't stretch and it doesn't round corners very well, although I have gotten around that by drilling holes at an angle approximating the run of the line.

Daren. Yes, but your likely method will be with CA & accelerator - using either elastic thread or wire/stretched sprue cut exactly to length. I prefer elastic thread. Very tiny dab of medium/thick CA at base of strut/wing, touch end of thread in accelerator and touch/hold it to that spot & let sit. Then tiny dab at other end, either CA on end or a tiny brush, and touch/hold thread to it until dry. You, of course cut the thread to length, actually a tad shorter, so the elastic gives you a tight line.

Hi John. I have some old tippet (I thrash the bushes fly casting with the best of them) that has a few wind knots in it so it is now very fine rigging material.

BTW, is it possible to rig a completed model? I ask because I have two of these little beasts that might benefit!
Yes, but you would have to be very careful drilling holes in the wing. If you were going to do the crossed wires on the wing, I'd drill holes in the lower wing from underneath, supporting the lower wing as you do so. Then glue the elastic thread to the underside of the upper wings, thread through the hole and pull just taut and glue in place.

cheers

Sorry folks, I've not had much chance to crack on with this since I last updated.

I've now got my EZ line, so at some point this week I'm going to attempt to attach it to the model....! :???:

And some accelerator.
I put a pool of CA glue in a beer cap and I have a little pot of zipkicker. I use a toothpick to dab on the glue, then I have a fine piece of wire to dab on the accelerator once I have the EZ line held in contact with the glue.

Whatever method you use, make sure to practice it on an old model or a painted piece of plastic card a couple of times first.

Hi chaps

Not much progress on the silver SE5a, sadly. I'm currently attempting to do the rigging on one of my older SE5as to see if I can do it. At the moment it looks.... OK. Ish.

I'll persevere, though. I don't know if I'll get the SE5a done by the deadline, but the Albatross certainly won't make it - it hasn't even peeked out of the box!

On a more positive note, there's an article in the latest Flypast about the Shuttleworth SE5a - they've discovered it actually has a combat history, and a confirmed kill to its credit!

Well, here's my old SE5a made up with some rigging.

I know, it looks naff! I also attempted to do some of the tailplane wires as well. The EZ line is basically just glued onto the model - this was easier to attach to the struts than to the wings! It looks OK from a long way away.... :???:

One thing I would suggest, Daz, is to drill shallow holes into the wing surface where the rigging should be attached to, prior to assembly of course. Then add a tiny drop of superglue to the hole, then attach the line.
