Stuart's RFC Scouts.

A World War One GB - any subject, any scale, 1914-1918 - this is not a 1914-specific GB.
Runs 6 weeks, July 28th to September 8th, to allow plenty of time for biplanes, rigging, and holidays.

Looks small and fiddly in that pic, or do you have hands like King Kong?

Hi guys,

Just in case you were wondering I am still here - I'm got the U/C on and given it two coats of linen on the undersides. Nothing really worth taking a picture of yet, although I'll add something later.

I've also drilled out the pilots bottom and inserted a cocktail stick up it with which to hold when painting him - the moulding pretty soft but I'll see what I can do with it.

I'm enjoying this Biplane building stuff - rather fun and opens up a whole range of possbile models.

Cheers

Stuart

Thanks Toby, I'm pretty pleased with it for a first attempt.

It's a nice little kit actually. It would be nice to do another in Western front markings and make use of the earlier two blade prop and front radiator supplied on the sprues - which would make it a SE5 rather than an SE5a I guess.

As far as I can remember the SE5 had structural differences to the 5A. The different props/radiators are for either the Wolseley engined [two blades] or Hispano-Suiza engined [four blades] versions of the 5A
Al speling misteaks aer all mi own werk..
Its not just how good your painting is, its how good the touch-ups are too.

They are indeed Fred, I certainly see more in my future (mind you, haven't tried to rig it yet!)

I can't be certain from your photos, but it looks like you are using the radiator for the Wolseley Viper engine - two separate radiator fin sets, header tank slightly separate from fin sets, a little bit more square across the top. If so, it was usual, but not always so, to have the 2 blade prop on this engine.

That's interesting, I've used the one called out for the four blader - let me take some close ups as it wouldn't surprise if they were mixed!

It was usual, but not a hard rule. Both props were used on either engine, plus other engines. Maybe the one for your markings was Wolseley/4 blade prop.
