Miguelito's Hawker Tempest Mk V - FAIL

Post by mjatx »

I may have to change the date, depending on what happens with my (er...my kids' and family) schedule this weekend, but I think I'll have the time to dedicate to getting this one done...I hope. I'd hate for my first GB to go down in flames.

This is the Revell of Germany, Micro-Wings 1/144, Hawker Tempest Mk V.

Also, that time is 8pm CT...meaning about 4am BST, so hopefully everyone in the UK will wake up on Saturday morning to a completed model from me! :ha: :ha: :ha: :ha:

Ah, I remember my first Blitz. I made it with about an hour to spare if memory serves me. Good times. I would love to do more but with life and family there is no way. Nice choice. I love the 1/144 scale kits. Despite what most people think there is a lot you can do to these kits. I look forward to your build

Hope I didn't break any Blitzbau rules, but I pulled the plastic out of the bag to get a picture of the sprue. Looks like a little flash, which should be interesting to deal with at this scale and is apparently fairly common with these RoG kits. Still it has nice detail for its size.

Image

I only had a couple of nickels (US and Canadian) to show the scale.

Miguelito's Hawker Tempest Build - August 22 - 8:35pm

Post by mjatx »

And we're off....sort of.

I had the day off from work today, and as one of the last acts of summer, my family and I spent the day at a massive waterpark just south of us. The kind with loads of slides, tubes, and sloshing about in the wave pool. Loads of fun, but now I'm exhausted...still, this is still an opportune time to start the project...a little later than expected, but started nonetheless.

As you can see the model is still attached to the sprues, but that'll end shortly.

Image

This one seems simple enough, but I'm sure there will be something to trip me up along the way...more than likely, it'll be a self-inflicted wound.

More to come.

Pretty sure Austin, TX is the same time zone and I'm well past my bed time. I'd probably be further along, but for some odd reason, I decided to add some details to the wheel wells and the cockpit. Not an actual cockpit, but just some pieces to make it look better than just an empty hole.

Image

Still, about 2 hours in and it's moving along. The interiors are painted, wings are together (the second half of the wing was completed while waiting for the pictures to upload), and the fuselage is going together next. I'm hoping to have main assembly completed and primer on before I hit the sack tonight.

Image

The flash on the prop is giving me problems, and will probably be set aside until I get some sleep and can focus better. There's a LOT of flash and the blades are VERY thin, so it's just a matter of time before one blade gets knocked off.

Can anyone tell me how to change the title of this topic? Or will I need to post a new topic to have a different title? Thanks.

While test fitting the fuselage, I noticed something that's going to really bother me...

Image

...fixing this seam is going to be a pain in the butt. Trying to reshape the vent into an oval will be fun too.

Well, I think I fixed the intake...or at least, it's as fixed as it's going to get.

Step 1. Cut out the offending area.

Image

Step 2. Cut playing card to fit area that was cut out and glue it in.

Image

Step 3. You have a reasonable new intake, without a seam down the middle...and in the approximate shape it should be (oval).

Image

The fuselage needed a surprising amount of filler to get the seams corrected, and attaching the wings to the fuselage was even worse.

Image

For the scale of plane, and being a relatively newer kit, the fit of the kit is disappointing. As this stage in the game, I'm only giving myself a 50/50 chance of completing it in time.

Alright, it's ready for some primer. I know there is going to be a significant amount of clean up needed after this first coat, so I'm not expecting much.

Once the primer is on, I'm going to BED!!! It is WAY past my bedtime, and I am tired.

More in the morning...hopefully!

Racing along there, great work.

I think to change the title you edit your first post at the top of the thread.

Cheers

Just go to the very first post and click the edit button, you can then change the title and save the post in the normal way.
