Chip's He 219 'UHU' Night Fighter***Finished***

Post by Molly-new »

The subject of choice for this build is the Frog Heinkel He.219 'UHU' Night Fighter:

On first perusal it looks to be a fairly straight forward build, I reckon the most taxing part will be the painting:

I must be dotty to be doing this scheme. :-D

All the separate and split control surfaces mean there is quite a bit of clean to do. Otherwise it is a straight forward build (as long as you don't install spin'a'props as I did! )

Heck James, you were a bit of a masochist to do that I reckon, the end result looked real good though. I'll be keen to see what Molly does with his one.

Crikey James, that looks awesome. The way you scratch built the cockpit has inspired me to do some extra work on mine.

Thanks! If you build it wheels down (save you messing with those ill fitting doors) I would fill the nose and nacelles with lead as it a notorious tail sitter.

After looking at a few past builds I decided that the best approach was to do all the menial work first, so I have been tediously cleaning up and assembling all the sub sections:

Removing ejection marks and filling sink marks:

Image

The Aileron appears to have a quite prominent whole in it, but I am not sure why, anyone any ideas?

Thanks for the advice, it will be done wheels down so I will have to clean up the inside of the wheel-wells:

Taking inspiration from your build I have started to build up the cockpit:

The trouble with this is that I end up doing 2 hours of research for 10 minutes of building.

Quick update of how things stand,

I decided to go with the issue pilots as I have no spare:

Image

Not great molding but they painted up OK:

Image

I have made a start on the construction with the engine nacels and landing gear:

Image

The exhausts will be put on after painting, but I have drilled them out as they were solid ended:

Image

Looking forward to getting some colour on now.

I have also done some work on the cockpit area, working form the myriad of pictures available on the net:

Construction has come on aplenty since my last report:

Image

The fit to the wing was not particularly good so I decided to get the best fit possible on the top of the wing and fill under the wing as it is less obvious.

Image

The wheel wells and cockpit have now had a liberal coating of RLM 02. I have been having a mare getting the paint to cover, even though I gave all the parts a good wash prior to starting, could it be the plastic that Frog used, or just resilient release agent?
