Fred's Macchi 202

Post by fredk »

I'm coming in with this one. I'm a bit late on putting up the pictures.
I didn't intend to do this model for this build. I picked it up from my stash in storage and had it in my car last weekend. Last weekend I was at the Portrush Air Show. On the Sunday the traffic leaving the Port was going nowhere very slowly. I was parked up, but the car queue by me never moved in nearly 3 hours. I knew it was going to be a bit of time so I dug this kit out. I also had an Airfix starter kit, so I used the glue from it, and my trusty big penknife which I keep in the car. Since starting it I mislaid the camera with card, and the kit. Found them today.

and as far as I got last Sunday;

It doesn't look like much done, but there was a fair bit of scraping to clean up the parts. It needs a bit of fillers, the wheel wells blanked off, possibly an i/p, and some decals - the kits ones are yellowed and very basic.

Well, I've heard of modeling in hotel rooms and at work, but never in the car! :shock:

A bit further on; an i/p installed, a floor to the cockpit for a control stick, a bit of plastic card to blank off the wheel wells, and lots of filler along the seams, much more than is really needed >>

Once all that filler is hard a good sanding down. The wheels are like shirt buttons so I'm buying replacements from Hannants.

Its been a long time since I built an Italian jobbie

Great progress, Fred!

And remember: you're only supposed to sand the bl**dy panel lines off!

Martin

Did you manage to locate any decals for it Fred? Just wondering what scheme you will be going for.

I'll be doing it in North African scheme, tan with green blotches over grey. I've located some decals, but, but, but, they're on ebay and the 'auction' doesn't end till next Sunday. Its a set just whot I want, for the 202/205 with plenty of squadrons on it, and especially one I really, really want for this model.
Meanwhile; paint has been applied. Resin wheels have arrived and been undercoated in matt black.
A photo or two soon.

Some paint on; needs rubbing down and more coats;
The prop is just balanced in place for the photo;

When I assembled the prop to the spinner there were the huge slots at the blade roots. I cut a disc of plastic card stuck that in, then filled the slots with filler. A much better look to it now I think.

I got the painting finished, but after it sat a couple of days it didn't look right to me, so I rubbed it back to plastic. Went and did a rally on Saturday and came home with a very bad cold, been out of action till today. I need to repaint the 202 [this evening] and I'm waiting on the decals I won off ebay [coming from Denmark I think]. So it looks like I'll not be completely finished by tomorrow evening.

That is a shame Fred, no point rushing to finish a GB and ending up with a model that you are not happy with (speaking from recent experience :oops: ) I am sure you will get it finished one day.
