Paul's Wyvern **DNF**

Post by PaulBradley »

WHY-vern or WIVV-ern? I've always used the former..... :???:

Nevertheless, a brute of an aircraft. Frog's kit was one of the last they released and was the only Wyvern for many, many years, making it highly desireable for a long time. Even with the Trumpeter kit available, it is still worthy of attention. Here's the boxart:

And the parts:

Not much in the way of internal or external detail, no 'moving parts' options, aside from the props, a basic cockpit and two decal options. The decals are somewhat yellowed and I may substitute a set from my Trumpeter kit; I may also grab the torpedo from that kit if the fancy strikes, as the RPs are very clunky and not worth salvaging. I am definitely substituting a Falcon vacform canopy for the very thick and heavily-framed kit example! The other change I'll make is to remove the clunky exhausts and substitute some lengths of drinking straws. Aside from that, it'll be OOB.

I agree it’s a WHY-vern.

Great to see one of these built, I have a 1/48 vacform to build of this fine beast and recall building the Frog version back in the early 70’s.

The fleet Air Arm Museum has the only example left in existence but it’s a prototype and has a piston engine. You don’t appreciate the size of these beasts until you stand next to one they really are big for a single seat a/c.

I look forward to watching this build.

That's a really cool looking Aircraft! I want one!

FROG do seem to be pretty good for FAA subjects on the whole.
Stuart Templeton I may not be good but I'm slow...

For years that a/c sat out side as a gate guardian to the museum in those fictitious colours then they moved it indoors and eventually restored it back to its original BMF as it would have flown in when carrying out all the test flights.

I agree they had a really good selection of FAA a/c and normally the shape was good just lacking in detail.

Nice subject!
Unfortunately never was NOVO. Two Ukraine's enthusiasts restore Frog-tooling in early 1990s and we get some quantity Wyvern kits in ex-USSR.
And I agree - FROG has makes most FAA Aircrafts and more from them was non-alternative before MPM/Special Hobby products.

Yes, Frog always was biased towards the Royal Navy...! Might be a good future theme for the CBK SIG Telford Display - Classic British Kits Celebrates the Royal Navy.

Nor me - my dad was Navy.

Taking advantage of the holiday here, been cracking on with this today. First, I rescribed the wings, then glued them together. Then onto the cockpit. Simple - a seat-and-tub-in-one with a stick, and a simplified IP. I added some paper extensions to the IP (from a modeling mag of considerable vintage), and added a Milliput seatback and cushion to the seat, as well as some painted tape belts. All painted up and added to the starboard fuselage half.

As it is basically black in there, I decided that adding much extra detail was pretty pointless.

Once that was all set up, I glued the fuselage halves together, and this is the state of play here at lunch.....:

....Almost blitz-like......

Bombing along! Chiz, Martin.

Got the exhausts sorted. Had to ream out a pair of new backends, one each side, then inserted a length of drinking straw, suitably cut to size and angle. Doesn't look too bad. Need to rescribe the fuselage next - not going to be fun!

It must have been a hot cockpit with those jet pipes running underneath it.
