Beany's Dornier Do 335

Post by beany »

After my rather humiliating failure to start previously, I've managed to find another pair of genuine FROG
contenders this time. Here I will be concentrating on the Dornier first, and then will progress to the Boston if time
permits afterwards.

Image

I had intended to do the British scheme, but as the paint plan shows the German RLM colours it will give me a chance to
try out the Humbrol RLM acrylics I have just brought, namely RLM 74, 75 and 76 for this scheme (and RLM 66 for the interior).

I got home from work early today and began work on the Dornier. The props, like most of the parts, have seam lines that
need tidying up. These spinners will lose the prop blades soon as this model will be posed on the Sky Base with a couple of
home made acetate prop blurs added.
Image

All that needs fitting inside are the two seats, and the cockpit floor, which has some nice wheel well detail, but this won't be
seen as she will be wheels up as I've said.
Image

I am really enjoying this kit, it is flying together.
Image

Holes in the wings had to be opened up for the antennae array for the version I am doing.
Image

I am using an old tube of Humbrol glue, one advantage of which is it is rather gloopy but does bind very quickly. A few hours
work and she is already mounted on the SkyBase, sans prop blades as promised.
Image

No way these parts (intakes and exhaust) can go on like that. Out with the mini drill bits and pin vice.

Canopies just posed in place, not glued yet. First job tomorrow will be a coat or two of primer. Loving this kit!!!

Looking good!

The '335 has always fascinated me - can you imagine what would have happened if the Germans had had them in quantity?!

They'd have been bankrupt, with no engines for other aircraft? :ha: :ha:

I have the Revell re-issue of the Arrow from I dunno, maybe 1979, with another unbuilt one that is missing parts..........the Boston has nice RAAF decals, if a bit nasty in tone. Great subjects, both of them. The Do335 represented in the kit is, I understand, a composite, as the only nightfighters that were completed were single seat. This is actually a two seat trainer variant.

Yeah, the box Colour Painting Guide has this note: "The scheme shown here represents the camouflage that would probably have been applied to the A-6 version of the Do.335 which was not completed and flown before the end of the war."

Regarding the Boston, I have recently purchased some White Ensign Models enamel paints in RAAF shades = Earth Brown, Foliage Green, Sky Blue, and Interior Green which I intend to use on it.

Stalled on this one getting ready for Farnborough last weekend. Will attempt to get it finished this week. I'll be brush painting it - Humbrol RLM Acrylics seem awful to spray.
