Bluesteels Meteoric Meteor F Mk IV ***FINISHED***

Post by bluesteel »

In a fit of madness. and because I so enjoyed building the Baltimore OOB I'm going to attempt a first for me - two builds in a single GB! This time the FROG Meteor F Mk IV. Again straight from the box 'as FROG intended'. The decals look a tad yellowed so I may use another more recent set, but that's the only change I'll make. I may not post as many sub build photos as I need to get a move on with just over a week to do it :-D

Made a start:

The instructions don't show any nose weight but I expect it'll need some as I'm building it gear down this time.

Nose weight added and fuselage closed. Wings and tailplane dry fitted to test the balance point by my
Tamiya Tape Dispenser top method. Looking at where the wheels will be from the underside it looks as
though I've added enough weight. We shall soon see...

Flying surfaces attached. Generally a good fit. Tippex will suffice for the top joins and a small
amount of Humbrol filler for the under wing joins.

Started the first aluminium silver coat. This will be harder to get it even than the white on the Baltimore I think. Steady as it goes...

U?C on as well as under-wing tanks. It's still finely balances as far as tail sitting is concerned so
I've filled the front of the belly tank with weight and that seems to keep it on it's nose-wheel
now - or it will once the glue has firmed up. I'm not happy with the paint job by hairy stick, a
metallic finish is far harder to achieve than the flat white of the Baltimore and it's still not quite
there, despite a layer of Klear.

Now a quick coat of the excellent Army Painter Anti Shine Matt Varnish to give it the dulled down
'High Speed Silver' almost light grey look:

Decals next, but will the FROG ones be too yellowed to use. We shall see...

Well I'm having a go with the original FROG decals. After a few days in a bag in the sun they are
not as badly yellowed as they first seemed. But they are thick. I hope lashings of Micro Sol will
eventually settle them down.

Julian,

Nice!

What paint did you use? Merlin Jones used to reckon that Humbrol Metalcote could be brush painted then buffed gently when cured to get rid of brush marks.

Martin

Thanks Martin.

I brush painted using Revell Acrylic Aluminium then used Army Painter Anti Shine Matt Varnish spray to dull it down to an approximation of dulled High Speed Silver. It worked on my Prentice and looks not to bad on the Meteor either. I can't see any obvious brushmarks now just a slight mottling in places which will pass as weathering :-D
