Re: Lancfan's War Surplus Mosquito
Great! Can't wait to see the colour scheme.
Is that this kit?
That's the one I have bought for an Air Police build at some stage.

It is the very one VV, the colour scheme isn't very spectacular- according to the book both the Mosquito and the "Spur" were painted Light Grey.

This will be started tomorrow by detailing the cockpit and closing up the fuselage.

Re: Lancfan's War Surplus Mosquito
Work began this morning, the first thing to work on was the cockpit which is really quite poor OOB. This kit builds into one of three different versions and the cockpit doesn't properly match any of them, the wing seating intrudes into the cockpit space and spoils the proportions of the interior parts. I began by thinning down the front inside half of the fuselage wing seatings as far as I dared to and then I covered the gaps with Tamiya Tape to form new cockpit sidewalls. These were then painted ready for assembly. The only kit cockpit parts I used were the IP, the Floor and the Control Column (parts 7,8,9) then using photographs of a full size FB.6 cockpit I chose to cast a new set of seats and radios from resin using moulds from my toolbox and made the two rear cockpit floor levels from balsa wood.
The cockpit Painted and ready to fit.
The tailwheel was painted and fitted, the cockpit installed and the fuselage joined up.
The wings were then assembled, the rivets were removed and the front halves of the wing attachment tongues were cut flush to the wing seating faces.
The wings were then joined to the fuselage.

Thanks Paul, the tailplanes and engine pods have been assembled and cleaned up ready to be fitted.
The engines, tailplanes, canopy and drop tanks have been fitted, the model is now ready for paint and decals.

Re: Lancfan's War Surplus Mosquito
A really nice bit of scratch building in the cockpit as usual David - Nice work.
I think dropping the elevators really adds to the look of the model too.
Cheers

Re: Lancfan's War Surplus Mosquito
This is looking like a pretty sharp build with lots of good tips, I've book marked it for reference for the several I've got tucked away.

Re: Lancfan's War Surplus Mosquito
Thanks VV, Nigel, Stuart, Steve, according to the book the aircraft Biggles and the team took to Germany were stored ex-RAF machines, so to give the impression of an aircraft that has been repainted I applied two layers of odd decals before painting the model, in this way the outline impressions of national markings will show on the surface of the model.
The model has been painted in Revell Aqua 371 light Grey, this is much lighter than medium Sea Grey and suits a civilian aircraft far more, I have imagined that this colour was mixed from Medium Sea Grey and Airframe White by the MU tasked with the repaint and that Identification (roundel) Blue was used for the civil registrations and the spinners. The Union Flag on the fin is a nice period touch and came from the Airfix Comet Racer kit. The propellers are from the NT Revell Lancaster kit as they look far better than the older Airfix items.
