That yellow looks great, the orange under coat has worked well, I will remember that.

Yep, this one is heading on to the final furlong.

And with that in mind I set about decalling today.

The aircraft, as I mentioned before, is the one that made the final flight of the DDR air force in September 1990 and it's specially marked to commemorate that. For this particular aircraft I picked up a set of decals by a company called Hi-Decal Line. I've never used their decals before so this was a bit of a journey into the unknown.

I'm not impressed :frown:

This is what happened to the first one.

Image

It did this as soon as it got wet. Luckily the flash on the other fin stayed together but both of them were too long and needed trimming. I only found this out after they were wet :frown:

This rapidly turned into a wrestling match. Further issues were had with the commemorative banner marking that also split into 2 pieces and all of the edging strips around the yellow areas were a little too short. I did double check that this was a set recommended for this kit

Image

Then I got to the worst bit, the code numbers.

Image

These are too big and the way they were spaced on the sheet meant that they overlapped the intake :frown: I had to go through the nerve wracking process of cutting them apart while they were wet and then re-assembling them on the model with the spaces closed up. I don't think Hi-Decal Line will be at the top of my "favourites" list any time soon.

The sheet contained quite a few stencils too but I decided not to bother with them for 2 reasons. First, I feel that stencils don't show up too well on camouflaged aircraft in 1/72nd scale, and second, I'd had as much as I could take of the decals :frown:

There's been some more progress tonight but that'll be for my next update.

Nice save with the decals Dazzled. Hate it when they give you trouble, they're fragile enough to begin with.

No modelling today, I'm afraid.

Being Welsh there was, naturally, another priority today

Despite having a bit of extra time on this GB, I made a concerted push to get this one in the bag today. There wasn't much left to do: undercarriage doors, a couple of lights, aerials, missiles and a minor bit of painting over a couple of hours saw the -29 done.

And here it is.

And this is what it was all about:

The beginning and the end of the East German Air Force.

Time to clear the bench I think.

Great build Dazzled and an excellent themed duo.

I can sympathise with you about the Hi-decal having used them myself. They are the only game in town for most DDR subjects.
They are why I go for generic sets of roundals\numbers & rarely do specialize builds. Guess I am too lazy.
