Andrew's East German Missile Boat *Fertig*

Post by AndrewR »

I'm going to build one of the East German Navy's Tarantul missile corvettes

The kit allows you to build it as the Rudolf Egelhofer, in DDR (the "Ossies") colours, or after reunification as the Hiddensee, in service with the unified German Navy (the "Wessies"), or as the USNS Hiddensee, when it was transferred to US control (and largely operated by the original crew of "Ossies").

Image

It's not a particularly large kit in 1/400 scale, and the parts are relatively large in size and so hopefully easy to handle.

Instructions in Polish with an English translation. Paint callouts are Humbrol, although it doesn't actually mention that anywhere. The instructions look reasonably good. There are one or two ominous looking "trim to fit" annotations in there though!

Image

To make it look a bit nicer, I have some Tom's Modelworks photoetch rails and ladders. I seem to have the 2 bar railing, when 3 bar is called for. Oh dear, how sad, never mind.

I'm going for the DDR version, so it will be a light grey hull with green paint below the waterline. The deck is a darker green. I seem to have most of the Vallejo equivalents, so that's good. The doesn't seem to be an easy waterline option, so rather than a lot of sawing, I will opt for full-hull.

cheers

so i take you will be adding in the 3rd bar yourself? ;-)

Are you planning on mounting the hull on a base?

Two chances: fat or slim

Probably just on the stand provided.

The official designation for these 500 ton ships, by the National People's Navy was Small Rocket Ship:

"Kleines Raketenschiff der Nationalen Volksmarine Typ 'Tarantul I'"

There are plenty of pictures of her once in unified German and US service, rather fewer in DDR service! However, the basic colour scheme above water does not seem to have altered much. The deck colour is a light green, some of the deck fittings are in a medium blue (presumably to stop people tripping over them!) and the superstructure is a light grey overall.

cheers

Nobody's going to notice the lack of a railing bar Andrew. Those railings are going to make it look terrific anyway 8-)

I always assume the lower railing is too close to the deck to distinguish it.

Mirage Hobby kits are "interesting" to build but can turn out quite good. Watch for breakage getting small parts off the sprue.

Yeah, don't frigate to treat Mirage kits as you would a short run kit, and yacht to be alright.

If you do find yourself rushing, try to ketch yourself in the process, or you'll end up with a big scow on your face.

Dry fitting is an ironclad plan. She's a nice ship, it would be a shame if you destroyer by rushing :ha:

Sorry, I sloop pretty low with these ship puns of mine. Please don't keel me.

To Hull and Back

The hull and deck are three pieces, and so is the stand. The stand takes a matter of moments to stick together. The hull is less easy!

Image

There are no locating pins, so I found it easiest to glue at bow and stern first. Once those joints were dry, then squeezing the midships parts together was relatively easy

Image

The joint between the two hull pieces, along the keel, did require some sanding, and may need some filler.

Image

Image

I'm going to prime it first though, before doing any filling there. Just in case I can get away without it! :-D

Image

The deck piece also doesn't really want to fit that closely, although the same trick of aligning bow and stern first worked again.

Image

There are a couple of places on the side where the deck extends out beyond the hull, rather than being flush. Those parts will definitely need filling.

cheers

Looks like the "fun" has started early Andrew. :)

I'm sure you'll coerce it into shape though.
