A Riveting Encounter with Shaka Zulu *** DNF ***
Here is may entry:
This is one of my holy grail kits which I picked up from Rob1970 at a bargain price. Thanks Rob.
As you can see it is just a jumble of parts but Rob assured me that everything is there. So if I don't finish its Rob's fault.
I am planning to do a South African MR3. I have had these yellowed decals stuck to a window for a few months now but they still look fragile.
The castle roundels are wrong but I have plenty of spares to replace those.
I was worried about the yellow lines but have just found these in the instructions:
Top bloke that Rob.
So my only problem now is building this beast without destroying those lovely rivets. Not to mention that I don't have a shelf big enough to hold it, may be it will be in flight.
Hopefully it will end up looking something like these:

Re: OT's Riveting Encounter
What's the consensus on these rivets, should they be removed?
I am reluctant to do so as I think they are part of the Shak look but plenty will be destroyed cleaning up the fuselage joints. .

Remove or make less obvious. Those in the kit would do justice to the Sydney Harbour Bridge

Good advice. So I will sort any seams first them sand down the rivets to match. A cunning plan.DH-Drover wrote:Remove or make less obvious. Those in the kit would do justice to the Sydney Harbour Bridge

Re: A Riveting Encounter with Shaka Zulu
Not much progress as all the parts need a good clean up. I did get the main wing sections together though and the fit is pretty good for such an old kit.
The windows had already been glued in but I plan to use PVA once all the painting is completed so I popped them out before starting on the cockpit area.
What colour should the interior be?
I am pleasantly surprised at how thin the clear parts are. I gave them a dip in Klear to make them shine.
I am away to Telford this weekend but as soon as I return the interior will get sorted.

Re: A Riveting Encounter with Shaka Zulu
No progress on this build as I have been concentrating on my Mig build for the cold war GB.
I have been sorting through the pile of parts and am missing the opposite part to this:
I should be able to knock something together to replace that easily enough. Once I have done that I will crack on with the interior. I think everything else is there.
My only concern is the amount of weight needed to stop her being a tail sitter as I am not sure I have enough!

Re: A Riveting Encounter with Shaka Zulu
Now that my Mig build is out of the way I am trying to crack on with this.
I have spent quite a bit of time sanding down flash on all the parts and checking that everything is in the box as all the parts were loose.
Part 32 was missing as were the crew figures.
So using the opposite part (33) as a template I cut some plastic card & added a seat from the spares box.
Once glued in place & painted black you can't tell it is not original.
Crew figures I have spares of.
I have had a bit of a struggle fitting the bomb bay interior. At first I thought it was me but it turns out that the fuselage is slightly warped.
Nothing I can't fettle though. Hopefully I can make some progress now but doubt I will finish in time. I will be happy if I can reach the painting stage.

Re: A Riveting Encounter with Shaka Zulu
This one is fighting me all the way!
Dry fitting the fuselage joint revealed that the left half of the fuselage top edge curls over too much. This leaves a very big step where the two halves join.
Annoyingly the bottom fit is spot on. So I have had to attach some plastic card along the top edge underside and fit some spru in to shore up the roof.
Here is the spru in situ:
Although not perfect you can see the result here:
So I am working my way down the fuselage adding spru!
I won't get much more done this week as life is getting in the way again and we are away this weekend.

Exactly the issue that I had with mine; I'm ashamed to say i ignored it
It's nice to see someone doing this the full justice of a proper build

Re: A Riveting Encounter with Shaka Zulu
Sounds like the sprues were ejected too early and the still-warm parts deformed when they fell out of the mould, hope you get to finish this O_T- if you need an extension to do so do please shout.

Re: A Riveting Encounter with Shaka Zulu
Just back from a frozen Edinburgh weekend David but pressing on.
Some heavy clamping required to hold my rear end!
I will have to work my way along the fuselage like this so will work on the wings whilst the glue dries.

This is part of the trouble with old Frog moulds, as well as wear and tear and lack of care causing damage to the tools they can also be installed into the moulding machines and run without being properly set up.

Re: A Riveting Encounter with Shaka Zulu *** DNF ***
Sorry guys. I am not going to get this one built anytime soon as work has suddenly kicked into overdrive.
I am only ever going to build one Shackelton so I don't want to rush this in order to meet the deadline.
I will try to move this along over on my workbench thread.
Once again, apologies.
