Re: Splash's WW1 Mk IV Heavy Tank
Rolling paper tubes is a good skill to develop but only where it's necessary...there comes a point when it is easier and more visually effective sometimes to raid the spares box rather than make a part from the paper provided...will you be adding the rivets as well..?

Re: Splash's WW1 Mk IV Heavy Tank
The beams going over the top gave me trouble, the design is strange and involves you laminating five layers and folding one part of the top layer over the other four layers then cutting through all the layers. I tried it and thought naaaaaa this isn't going to work, so i cut two thin strips of very thick card and laminated them together, this gave me a length of square section card that was simply bent into shape and stuck down and given a coat of paint.

I am Dirk. I'm starting to really like working with card.Dirkpitt289 wrote:You're on a roll Splash
Today I learnt something, I could never understand what the un-ditching beams were for, I just thought it was for getting out of ditches, I now know it was for helping get the tank moving when the belly of the tank got stuck and could not move, the un-ditching beam would give you extra ground clearance and grip on the slipping tracks.

Cunning plan to make an un-ditching beam.
Not wanting to fold card to make the large beam, I have come up with the cunning plan to laminate three coffee stirring stick as they are about the right size.

An eminently fine use of preprocessed paper...

I think it's worked quite well, after a rub over with a felt tip pen it's looking like an old chunk of wood.

I have given it a brown wash that has toned down the effect.jRatz wrote:Very funky looking wood ....

This kit has totally converted me to card, it's a brilliant first time build kit that looks great when finished.
I would recommend it to anyone thinking of trying a card kit or for any AFV builds looking for a change. There are no complex curves and the tricky bits like the gun barrels and exhaust can be simply replaced with basic tubes.
The build has taught me a lot about choosing the right card thickness

Excellent work, Splash ! It is easy to see how your card skills have grown over these few builds - and the brown wash has made that a beam to be envied !
