A Colorful Moth ** Finished **

Post by JohnRatzenberger »

Mine will be the new-tool Airfix Tiger Moth - the civil version not the "uncivil" military one.

I have the Eduard photoetch set, mostly interior bits, and the Xtradecal Tiger Moth decal sheet #3. I have a set of Kora floats but don't think I'll use them.

Image

The focal point of my scheme, and I stress "my" because it won't be an existing Moth, is the sun burst for the upper wing but otherwise the colors & markings aren't settled yet. I do intend to attempt a brightly polished cowl. I am trying for bright & cheery, not garish ....

We shall see, I have no creativity or artistic ability ...

Looking forward to seeing this build John - I do mean to get this kit so it'll be good to see what you make of it. I love tiggies, I had a really good flight in one once at dusk in the winter - best half an hour I ever spent in an aircraft.

Cheers

I got a start, but have been in meetings the last two days and have one more day to go. So I'll be back this weekend.

I shaved out the interior detail (to be replaced by Eduard) and then painted the interior colors - and that is it. Frankly the Eduard detail doesn't add much and I could have left it alone ....

OK, finally, the GBL bringing up the rear ....

I have the interior done. Having put the Eduard detail in, I can definitely say it isn't worth the effort, except maybe the seat belts.

I have a bit of touch-up paint to do then the fuselage gets closed up and I can move along ... finally !

At last, something bright & cheery. I have decided on orange wings for my Moth, possibly tail surfaces also. I played around and came up with a nice looking mix of 2 parts Vallejo Model Color 70.910 Orange Red and 1 part Vallejo Game Color 72.008 Orange Fire.

Tomorrow I'll get the tops painted and maybe a gloss coat on. The plan is to use the yellow(ish) sunburst from the decal sheet on top. If the sunburst doesn't work, the decal may become the template for a coat of paint instead. Once I sort that then I'll worry about the serial under-wing.

I do not have the fuselage scheme yet - I am thinking a blue.

I am making a pig's ear trying to gloss coat my wings. I'll attempt to rescue them tomorrow.

I have selected a Vallejo Game Color Magic Blue for the fuselage, at least initially. I need to see it with proper glossy orange wings to decide.

That's a nice shade of blue. It should contrast nicely with the orange.

And here we are muddling along.

Fuselage is together, adding tail & lower wing and stuff so I can try another gloss coat. One of the tail struts was short/broken but I made another and you can't tell. Also now starting to work on the cowl.

Nice, John. Really like the interior fabric impression.

Here we are, partly assembled, painted, and all glossed up.

Image

I had all sorts of problems with gloss on this and it really isn't that good up close, streaks underneath and so on.

I need to slow up a bit on this and give most of my attention to the Paper GB, but I do want to keep moving along .... I have sunburst decals for the upper wing and for the fin/rudder but I'm going to try them on the stabilizer instead. We'll see where all this goes ....
