Migrant's Hawk F1 * Finished *
First off, acknowledgements to Beany whose posting in the 'Wanted' section alerted me to the Claveworks Graphics site. There are dozens of beautifully rendered profiles, mostly what-ifs, of everything from Albatros D.Vs to Fireball XL-5s... Anyway, one that really appealed to me was the Williams Formula 1 BAe Hawk:-
I'll be using the Airfix BAe Hawk 100, just because its elongated nose is pure F1 and should suit the scheme.
The first step was to scan in the paint diagrams from the kit (I chose the Indian option because the panel lines were the clearest) and enlarge them to 1/72 scale to match the kit parts.
From the drawings/scans I was able to create a set of decals. Some of the logos were found on the web in vector format, but several had to be created from scratch. From looking at photos of the real car I identified a couple of extra sponsor logos that I may add to the model. Here's the sheet so far. It may need slight adjustments once the decalling begins as the 3D surfaces may not quite match my 2D estimations, but I think they're pretty close.
My intention is to build it wheels up in flight mode, which means adding the little men in the cockpit and mounting it on a suitable base.

Cool! One of my all-time favourite F1 cars, that Williams FW11.
Will the pilots have full racing gear and helmet as well?

Looks good, welcome !

It's my model and I'll do what I want with it.

Thanks guys. Don't think so Paul, though I plan on painting the flight suits bright red. It's supposed to be a fairly quick build which I'm fitting in for relaxation between a couple of magazine builds.PaulBradley wrote:Cool! One of my all-time favourite F1 cars, that Williams FW11.

Thanks guys. Made a bit of progress today. Painted the pilots and finished the cockpit assembly. Other than replacing the HUDs with thin clear plastic, it's all OOB.
I've dry fitted the wings but won't glue them until I've attached the intakes, as I suspect there'll be a bit of filling and sanding to get them smooth.

Looks terrific, Mike.
As it's a Williams, a la Nigel Mansell's car, there are a couple of important additions; 1. Canopy open, pilot streaming Union Flag out the cockpit; and 2. Ayrton Senna needs a lift back to the pits on the port air intake.....
Good luck with those.....!

Took me a few seconds to work out what was going on with the flame headed pilots.

Re: Migrant's Hawk F1
Progress has been slow, but hopefully it will start to come together quickly once all the fiddly little jobs have been done. The intakes are done and faired in to the fuselage, which wasn't as onerous as I'd feared. First the intakes were sprayed white, the blank rears painted black, then the leading edges inside masked off for a sharp line.
Once the intakes were glued together a piece of foam was stuffed in each one to mask off the insides.
Next steps are to clean up the fuselage seams, then attach the wings.

Re: Migrant's Hawk F1
OK, I shall bow to peer pressure - red 5 it is. But no Ayrton Senna figure; he was there, but blew off at Mach 1.
This is not turning out to be such a quick build after all (surprise, eh?). I'm actually a bit underwhelmed by this kit. Even though it's a new tool, it seems very basic and the panel lines are really heavy; it's more like a Hobbycraft than a modern Airfix. Most of the parts fit OK, but compared to the new-tool P-51D the Hawk seems like a different generation of tooling. I guess it shows how far Airfix have come in a short space of time But, I'm plodding on, hoping to get a white primer coat down this a.m.

Primered, and the first gloss white coats applied. I've left off the stabilizers and various other fins/aerials to facilitate masking.
With the yellow on. Even though it's acrylic thinned with lacquer, and is touch dry after 10 minutes, I'm leaving this overnight before I apply masking tape over the yellow.
