Fred's Dornier 17E **Finished**
I shall attempt to build an old Airfix Dornier 17 E / F
The decals are rubbish so I'll have to replace them with ones from the spares file.

Re: Fred's Dornier 17E
Plastic was cut and paint applied this morning. A first coat of RLM 02. Since these photos a second has been put on. Just to paint a few cockpit details now. The instructions would have one put the instrument panel in back to front.

Re: Fred's Dornier 17E
Filler applied, rubbed down and main bits stuck together. Then more filler.
I'm working on the u/c now. It seems simple enough but it just doesn't fit together.

Re: Fred's Dornier 17E
Its up on its u/c legs, ready for pale blue/grey [RLM 65] paint to go on the unders. Should be able to get the first coat on tonight.
The problem with the u/c bits was lack of room. The wheel chassis and actuators had pins on their ends to go into holes inside the sides of the thingy. The u/c doors had locator pieces moulded on which aligned with bits inside the thingy. If one put the u/c chassis on first there was no room to get the u/c doors onto their mounts, if one tried the u/c chassis parts popped out of the holes. If one put the doors on first, then the ends of chassis parts had to be squeezed together to get past them, then the pins wouldn't reach the holes.
I won.
I shaved off the locators on the doors and glued to them to the outside edges. This also made them fit more in line with what is seen on photos. Using the parts as given had the doors splayed way out too far.

Well done. That undercart/door combination sounds fiddly!

Makes you wonder if the makers ever tried constructing some of their kits at times. Good work

Airfix send these kits out especially to test us, otherwise this hobby would be no fun.

Re: Fred's Dornier 17E
I've got two coats of RLM 65 on underneath. Tonight I'll mask up and get a coat of light grey on the top.
No photos for a while as whilst taking some other photos my 'modelling picture' camera broke down and then my main digi slr developed a serious fault as well. Even my compact had broken down a few weeks ago. Had to buy three replacement cameras today. Might have them for the weekend.

That's a cracker Fred. I'd love Airfix to do a new tool job on this kit.

As a matter of interest which DSLR did you go for?
Best wishes

Re: Fred's Dornier 17E
I decided on a Canon 50D. My old one was a Canon 20D, rebuilt once already, but I reckon now too old to be worth rebuilding.
The others are a Fuji HS20EXR [for model photos] and an Olympus C5050 [for carrying in the car]. All second hand from a dealer from which I've been buying cameras for nearly 40 years.
Dornier was masked up and Humbrol 64 grey put on the top surfaces. Now for RLM 63 Grey. I put the Humbrol on first as my RLM paints are very thin and need some background colour to help them.
