Splash's builds

Post by splash »

An impulse buy on eBay got me a part built Evening Star that came with a set of 9F metal wheels and con rods, my intentions were to buy a Dapol 9F and use the metal wheels to improve its looks.

I'm by no way a train enthusiastic, but I do love the old steam engines because I'm of an age that I remember the Southern Region before it was electrified, I have had the pleasure of building this kit before, when a friend of mine asked if I would build a fully detail version using metal wheels and replacement handrails and PE smoke deflectors, this did involve doing a lot of research at the time.

I recall having to scrape off all the bands around the boiler and the handrails as Airfix went a bit heavy handed.

The plan with this restoration is to convert it to either a train being restored or being scrapped.

Nice one. I look forward to seeing your efforts with this Splash as the kit is going to be my first victim on the workbench for this display.

A quick search found this image of a 9F about to be restored, so I'm thinking as we don't have a scrap yard an engine being restored might be a more suitable option.

Good idea and plenty of scope for some challenging painting/weathering techniques there Splash.

That's not challenging weathering that's the normal rough finish I get on my models :-D

I have picked up a new DAPOL version of the little 0-6-0 diesel Shunter and have started to build it as part of the Classic Airfix Kits GB

Here is the link to my build

Question what colour would suit the display, blue/yellow & black or Green/ yellow & black?

Just using the brass wire has made a massjve improvement. Watching progress with interest, as I am wary of tackling an engine.

Chris I have spare engines in the stash, if you want I can send one over to you to try.

A great start Splash, the brass has really enhanced the model. As far as the colour scheme is concerned, best speak to Al as I haven't got a clue I'm afraid - my knowledge of trains could comfortably fit onto the average postage stamp!

Looking great already Splash. One of my favourite shunter types. Livery wise for our time period you could go with all over black, all over green, or the later all over green with yellow and black wasp ends. If you do a Google search (Images) for "Bachmann Class 04" you'll see what I'm alluding to. Good luck with the yellow/black stripes if you choose it - I think it is the best looking scheme but have never had the guts to try reproducing it yet!!

If you choose the all over black you will need the circular "ferret and dartboard" type of insignia (usually used on coaching stock), rather than the later type with the bar either side.
If you need the former give me a shout and I'll see if I have any in the correct size.

Cheers
Al.

Cheers Al, I gather not many of these were in blue/yellow & black so the green/yellow & black sounds a challenge but doable.

I have also started on the Dapol wagons.

I like the size of theses kits, they are ideal for building on a tray in front of the TV :-D

Looking great Alan, some tricky masking ahead for the black stripes though ;-)
