Jim's American Tempest ** Finished **

Post by Jagewa »

Due to the devastating Japanese disruption of the American aero factories, the US Army Air Force had to turn to the Empire's manufacturing might, and equipped their European Air Forces with various British types, one of the most capable and beloved by the fighter jocks was the Tempest.

After seeing this Typhoon profile on Claveworks, I thought the Tempest would suit it as well.
Image
Not quite the same scheme as the profile, I as I like the idea of nmf wing surfaces like that Matchbox P-47. It might be combined with the fuselage spine and fin scheme of P-51 LouIV.

Cheers
Jim

You know, Jim, pondering further on your entry I just don't think a snazzy paint job is going to challenge you enough to keep your interest. So - and I'm thinking of your best interests only here - I propose you fit a small undernose intake and a belly radiator a la P-51D.

Go on - you know it makes sense!

Martin

Great idea, will look stunning. I did something similar last year http://www.uamf.org.uk/viewtopic.php?f=19&t=8902.

Yep, you can see why I have been quiet.... that is a cracker.

Sorry for the tardiness, had no time for any modelling, might be able to get an hour or so over the weekend.

No pressure, Jim. Build or don't build: it's up to you. We like your company, anyway.

Holiday here in Aotearoa, so Kia ora to some modelling time this morning.

Started removing bits and realised I hadn't posted sprue shots, so here's one..
Image
I've not built one before, but it looks a lovely kit, and form the dry fits I've been doing at the moment seems to fit well.

She'll be wheels up, so thought I'd see how the undercart doors fit, having them closed is not a kit option.
Cemented the three parts for each together.....
Image
They seem to fit rather well, just a bit of stuff to bring them levelish, might be a larger gap around the edges, but we'll see how it looks.

Got the prop blades on the spinner..
Image
this is the way they go isn't it? :ha:

Just a little modification on the radiator..
Image
They have moulded the cuckoo door induction intake, nice touch, but I don't like the look of the cuckoo door intake, so sanded it off and opened up the intake. Because of that I had to put a piece of plasticard across the back of the radiator, to stop the see through look.

Assembled most of the cokpit parts,a nd found a pilot figure as none in the kit, so time to let things setup.. while I have to go and fix the garage door, take kids softball practise, and a family 'must turn up to or you are deeper in the muck' dinner tonight...

Sorry, Jim, I had missed your post. Good start!

It's a nice little kit and the fit is pretty good as I recall. If you don't want the wheels / undercarriage legs, . . . .?

Martin

Eeeek, sorry, long time between dinner tabletop

Here's a couple of pics of current state of play.
Image
Fuselage is together, Hank is in place, with a nice bonnet to protect him from any rubbage.

Image
Undercart doors, are so so. I've got a bit of a gap at the front of the wing insert. I didn't get the radiator insert forward far enough, so had to do some dodgy trimming, thereby causing the gappage.

Stole a couple of drop tanks from a couple of Academy P-47 kits I had, I think they'll look good and meaty under the

Certainly looked at the Academy P-47 ones, and it did cross my mind, but I'd like more of an escort fighter look, than mud mover.
