Tim's BoB Lightning **Finished**

Post by TimJ »

In 1965 the top brass at the RAF thought that as that year marked the 25th anniversary of the Battle of Britain something should be done to mark the occasion. After some debate it was decided that a Lightning of 92 Sqn would be painted in the colours and markings of one of the squadron's Spitfires as used in the battle. It proved to be very popular with the crowds during the airshow season but naturally the livery was removed before the squadron was posted to Germany at the end of the year.

Pics to follow.

For this build I'll be using the old Airfix F.1A. Most of the parts were removed from the sprues when I bought it but they all seem to be there apart from the pilot. I'm sure I've got a spare one somewhere though.

Markings will be from various Modeldecal sheets and the spares box.

A bit slow off the mark with this one but after some parts clean up I got the interior painted and blanked off the fuselage vents.

Image

When the paint had dried some ballast was added to the nose, the fuselage closed up and the wings were fitted.

Image

The fuselage will need some filler along the upper seam but the wings fitted a treat. :)

I like that kit; yes, the new tool is better, and probably more accurate but of it's time the old one was state of the art and of course right up to date with the Lightnings being our front line defence in the middle of the cold war!

looking forward to the outcome of this very much
Best wishes

Sorry about the lack of progress but a couple of pieces went missing and there was more filling and sanding to do than I expected. Over the past couple of days I've finished the sanding and started on the painting.

The Sky will need another coat or two but I should get that and the Dark Green on tomorrow.

It wasn't easy trying to adapt a camouflage pattern meant for a Spitfire onto a Lightning but I think I've got pretty close.

The camo needs some touching up and the undersides of the wings need another coat of Sky. I'm not sure if it will be finished by tomorrow night but it won't be far off.

Looking good, I like. I'm a fan of these finishes. I liked it when the RAF did a Hawk in early Spitfire colours & a Tucano in Desert Air Force colours, so to my mind your what if is very much a could've been.
