I originally intended to build this as a restored and complete fighter airframe but the original centre section was not armed when the US Army captured the factory, indeed it was neither flight ready or fully assembled and the wings that were sent to the USA with it were found on site and left over from an earlier aircraft that had crashed. This picture http://airandspace.si.edu/explore-and-l ... fm?id=3571; was taken in 1950 and clearly shows the rigged aircraft and the paint edge mis-match at the leading edge.

This has led to a slight change of plan and the fully restored side of the model will be unarmed as it would have been had it been completed and flown, to show this I have replaced the kit gun access door for a plain plastic card one and the bare wood half only will appear to have the cannon fitted, the camouflage http://airandspace.si.edu/webimages/hig ... -2011h.jpg; will be based on that of the full size surviving wings. With that done the model was ready to be masked.

The model viewed from below after masking.

The model has here been sprayed in the base coats for the plywood finish (port wing only) and the camouflage matched to the odd pair of wings.

That's a very interesting approach to the model.

I then brushed different panels in various shades of tan/light brown to represent the effect of a wing skinned in wooden panels, masking each panel separately and carefully applying a wash of one or two shades of tan/beige, allowing the colours to blend where they touched. finishing off with a final airbrushed coat of matt varnish "clouded" with matt white.

I then sprayed on a white stripe to represent fabric covering and followed that up with a strip of the base colours sprayed down to take the colour scheme onto the wooden wing root, continuing by painting the control surfaces and any metal parts in the base colours.

Just as I had to paint a contrasting woodgrain effect for the plain wing the camouflaged sections also need a mottled patterning before spraying on a cloudy dampening coat. this dense pattern is taking time to complete and I have to break off from time to time for a scream break.

It's a really interesting approach you've taken with this model.

The upper surfaces have been patterned at last, the next task is to mask up and airbrush over this with a clouded varnish.

With three airbrushed coats of matt varnish mixed with Revell Aqua 79 blue Grey I have got the effect I aimed at. The decals will go on next followed by final assembly.
