Stuart it is an air drying craft clay, it is stocked by art shops everywhere, Hobbycraft, The Works and Amazon.
This (slightly arty) craft film explains what it is better than I can https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=IwULG2OUK2M;
I have found it can be used to copy single surface objects (half wheels, seats, radomes, IPs) from Miliput moulds fairly well.
you can speed up the drying time by leaving it on a window sill in summer or place it on a radiator in winter.

The wing panels have been attached to the model and I am now building up the tail unit, nacelles and turrets as I wait for the Das clay to dry before continuing.

Ah ok - sounds like a neat idea, I take it the miliput moulds dry quite hard then?

Cheers

Miliput is amazingly useful stuff, it withstands heat and pressure, it can be drilled and tapped and yes it is quite hard.

The Das Clay dummy fuel tanks have been glued in place and with the wing halves together they do show inside the wheelbays.

It's looking good David.

Have you seen these photos of a Lancaster being restored? It looks like the fuel tanks are red but that could just be a modern replacement. http://s130.photobucket.com/user/rum_mo ... s.jpg.html

Lancaster fuel tanks are normally red splash but as part of the preparations for flight "Just Jane" is getting nice new tanks manufactured to current standards and they are finished grey, she has new oil tanks also- these are green-grey.

That's what I like to see attention to detail and good research.

Neither I might add apply to me :-D

The engines have now been fitted, a perfect fit on all four, brilliant.
Image

The undercarriage is in place, after struggling with the awkward and fragile NT Revell undercarriage this simple, sturdy and realistic solution is a breath of fresh air, well done Airfix.
Image

And "Jane" is starting to really take shape-and I didn't have to chop up the wings to do it.

The flaps are in place and have been painted, all that remains are the fins, wheels, bomb bay and U/C doors, canopy, turrets, exhausts & propellers to complete the model.
Image

Just Jane differs from the kit in a number of ways, the wheels are from the Lincoln and the tyres are treaded, to convert the kit wheels I have cut out the flat centres from spare Revell wheel halves and then I flattened the Airfix hubs and glued the Revell hubs to the Airfix wheels. To represent the treads I painted the wheels black and sprayed the tyres grey in sections through a small, old kitchen seive. The mid-upper turret is a dummy and will be vac-formed in two halves from a temporary mould, this is shown on the left of the middle image and to the right of that is a pattern for the Martin turret which will be moulded for Vera.
