Stuarts Airfix 1/72 NT Avro Lancaster B.II

Post by Stuart »

Hi Guys,

For this GB I will be building Airfix’s new tool Avro Lancaster B.II kit (Pictures to follow). Although I’m not overly keen on the looks of a Lancaster with radial engines, the kit was a present from my Wife last year so I can’t complain really, and this GB gives me a good reason to build it.

I’ve NEVER built a four engined bomber before, and have only really dipped my toe into the water with twins (two started but none finished), so this will be a steep learning curve for me.

I'm not sure which markings I will go for yet - but will probably be the RCAF option (without the belly guns).

Looking forward to getting started!

Stuart

You'll be fine! Nice to see another less orthodox choice (unlike my straightforward one!)
Best wishes

Just remember, even in 1/72 these four engined jobs can get quite large. And wide..
Hoping to return to modelling sometime this year!!

You should plan on widening the wing spar holes in the fuselage. The wing spars are very delicate and the holes are a very tight fit. It is very easy for the spar to either bend or break at the cut-outs. I found this out when building my B.MkII and nearly turned it into a flying model.
On second thoughts, let's not go to Camelot. It is a silly place!

+1 what Chuck says - and don't make mistake of widening, painting, then assembling - even that coat of paint might be too much ...

Great!!! Thanks for the tip John. In some ways I might not paint the area around the fuse fit until I have too!

Good luck with this Stu. I've got the same kit which was, coincidentally, a gift from my wife. Unfortunately time constraints prevent me from taking part in this GB but I'll be watching with interest.

Thanks Darryl - I'm under some time pressure too - so I've not got a lot done so far (nothing picture worthy anyway.

Sorry for the lack of updates - it's been a bit of a busy week thus far - nothing to report other than some minor building and painted - I'm hoping to crack into this on Friday night.

The box is a bugger to fit in the back of my car...
