Lancfan's CWH "Vera" build. ***FINISHED***

Post by lancfan »

Because my rendition of "Just Jane" is going so well I will attempt to complete a model of the CWH Lancaster B.X, "Vera" using this Airfix kit and another part of the same Kits-World decal sheet.

As my model of just Jane is about ready for final assembly this model of Vera has just started pre-assembly with the fitting and selective blanking off of the fuselage windows. The top view shows the fuselage masked up to protect the details from the filler and the lower view shows the filler in place and the fuselage ready to be sanded down.

The Das Clay engineers panel is cyano'd in place and a stretched sprue handrail has been fitted.

The next step is to build up the cockpit based on pictures of the full-size 'Vera' in order to do that I need to fit the spars and bomb bay end panels, here the assembled wing spars and floor are dry fitted inside the fuselage whilst the glue dries.

This is looking good and Vera is worthy of tributes after crossing the Atlantic twice last year and performing well in UK.

What are you using for the Martin upper turret? Does the Afx kit have that option?

The Airfix kit does not have the Martin turret as an option David, I will scratch build mine.

Does the Hasegawa postwar kit have that ? I could look and send it over if your would like.
Might cut into your pace a bit but maybe allow me to catch up.

I'm fine John thank you, I'm currently cutting the hole into the fuselage and the turret has already been moulded.
I'm taking a break starting today and over the weekend to finish up my Spitfire builds so don't worry about catching up, don't forget it isn't a race and there is still plenty of time.

The interior has been finished as near to the full size as the available pictures allow, I could not find any shots of the navigator-W/OP area so have fitted the kit parts OOB minus the seat, the passenger seats have been made out of card (an Airfix box base) very little of the passenger section will be seen but at least one seat back should be visible through the mid-upper turret.

Here the fuselage has been glued together and the wheel bay wing ribs are in place.

The kit mid upper turret location has been filled with car filler and the new location for the Martin turret has been cut out and a new fairing has been made, also from car filler.
Image

The bomb bay doors have been glued in place.
Image

plastic card fuel tank end plates have been made up following jRatz's method and they have been painted in Revell Reddish Brown 37.
Image

THe Dark Earth and Dark Green were then applied to the fuselage and wing upper centre sections.

The colour division was then masked up and the fuselage undersides were painted in black.

The decals were next applied to the fuselage.

Looking good, although I think I saw the same construction steps before ? :)

I like the build/paint sequence, but I plugged away as I always do ....

The top wing halves were glued to the spars and the fuel tank end plates were in turn glued to the wheel bay wing ribs.

Fitted the lower wing halves to close the wing up ready for painting.

The uppersurfaces were then painted in Dark Earth and Dark Green.
