OT's Burmese Beauty *** Finished ***

Post by Old_Tonto »

My subject for this group build will be this Spitfire Mk.IXe as she appeared in service with the Burmese Air Force.

Image

This particular Spitfire has an interesting history. She started life as serial number TE 515 & was issued to No. 312 (Czechoslovak) Squadron, given the code D-UW.
She was then transferred to the newly formed Czechoslovak Air Force after the war before being sold to the Israeli Air Force, being given the Israeli serial 2058 (Black 58). After years of service in the middle east she was sold to Burma in 1955 along with 29 other Spitfires. The ferry flight from Israel to Burma in a story on its own. Once there she was given the Burmese number UB439.

I have been wanting to build this Spitfire for several years, ever since I got the Carpena decal sheet depicting the markings but my research hit a dead end regarding the sub variant and wing/tail type.
Fortunately I came across the above picture that clearly shows a Mk.IXe with clipped wings, broad cord rudder & fishtail exhausts. All very important to your Spitfire nuts like myself. :ha:

My chosen kit for this subject is the AZ 1/72 Spitfire IX and I finally get to use those Carpena decals.
It is also a good chance to break open my 'Joy Pack' which caused much hilarity in my household when it arrived for my last birthday. Here are the contents:

Image

What you get for £20 is 3 complete AZ kits which is very good value when you see the quality of the parts. They are on a par with Hasegawa and blow the Airfix Mk.IX away.
Although I will reserve my final opinion until I have built one. :)

Here are the usual establishing shots:

Two sets of instructions as this kit has the parts to make anything from an ealy Mk.IXc through to a late Mk.IXe (only high back version).

and those decals:

The only remaining question I have about the build is the camouflage scheme. It is hard to tell from the image and the only text I can find about it refers to dark brown and green over light blue.
This did not follow the standard Spitfire pattern so I guess there is plenty of scope for artistic license. 8-)
These Spits were used exclusively in the ground attack role so I may fit bombs or rockets it time permits.

Anyway, hopefully it will end up looking something like this:

Unfortunately I am away on holiday for the first week of this GB so I might be pushed for time especially as I have never built this kit before.
I wonder if I could sneak the kit into my hand luggage? She will never know. ;-)

I started the build last night by painting the interior green. No pictures today, the Internet connection is pretty slow where I am. There is some really nice detail in the cockpit which will all disappear when closed up.

Hopefully I can find a pub with better comms to upload images. That's my excuse anyway. :ha:

I have managed to paint the very nice interior parts despite being on holiday. Not as good as it could be but I am working with limited resources here.

Like I said before, loads of nice detail. Hopefully I can get the fuselage together tomorrow.

Your 'limited resources' look better than my 'full workshop finish' :). Nice going with the cockpit.

Thanks chaps. This is my current temp bench and progress.

Image

As you can see I have assembled the wing and fuselage. Totally disregarding the instructions I intend to fit the seat & IP etc from underneath before attaching the wing.

Agreed David, certainly neater than my usual hovel.

Progress has been swift. Sorry for the lack of pictures but this internet connection is incredibly slow. Today I was able to complete the basic assembly, apply filler and get a coat of primer on.

Yes I take a can of Halfords primer on holiday with me. :ha:

I am liking this AZ kit very much.

Work has stalled on this one as I can't find any reliable colour references for it.
So I decided to just go with what I had and painted the underside a pretty vivid light blue from Vallejo (sorry can't recall the number :???: ).

Image

I have read that these Spitfires were almost exclusively used in the ground attack role & carried a slipper tank - Burma is a big country!
A trip to the Spitfire spares box resulted in this 30 gal tank and some rockets. I think the Mark IX could only carry 4 rockets.

Image

I think the slipper tank came from a Matchbox Spitfire IX whilst the rockets are from an Academy Mark XIV.

Since this was taken I have masked off the blue and applied the first coat of Tamiya brown. I will see how it looks once dry as I may try to find a darker or less reddish brown.

Nice finish on the underside colour. Brown topsides will be quite a contrast!
