Tom's Fiddler on the roof

The one you have all been waiting for - Vac(u)-formed kits. Any subject, any kit, so long as the basis of the kit is vac-form (no, you can't enter an injection airplane with a vac-canopy). Started kits are eligible, within reason - this is a learning GB to introduce members the variety of kits, what can be accomplished with them, and to overcome any reluctance to add them to your modeling repertoire.
This is an extended GB, running 4 April to 31 May, and your hosts are Lancfan, SJPONeill, and Splash.

Tom's Fiddler on the roof

Post by TomW »

Just a placeholder post for the moment but my intention is to build the Contrail kit of the Tupolev Tu-128 Fiddler:

I'll add shots of the box contents as we get closer to the start date ;-)

I suspect I have the same kit, under the Sanger brand, in my stash. If so, you're going to have a blast with that canopy...

Do you have missiles to stick under the wings? I have some from the ICM weapons set, but I have some doubts about their dimensions (based on the fact that some other missiles in the same set look more like 1/48  ).

You're quite right there Rob, the canopy is devoid of any framelines at all :-| . Looks like some creative masking will be required as well as lots of pouring over pictures. As regards the AA-5's ; no I haven't got any so unless I can get hold of the ICM set cheaply this will be unarmed for now.

Whoops, forget I mentioned that. I just found out I was looking at AA-6s, not AA-5s. Good thing this came up, otherwise my 128 would have ended up with some very wrong missiles..

Funny you should mention that Rob, I did some digging after I replied and it seems no-one does the AA-5 Ash in 1/72. I've got some AA-6's spare as well but they are just too different to get away with  They aren't the most difficult shapes so I might be able to scratch some from sprue and plasticard if I can find some good drawings and measurements.

Guess I'm not the only one digging then:-)
Apparently, Amodel did a short run Tu-128 at some point, which had AA-5s of course. The AA-6s would seem to be prime candidates for conversion, as the body diameter is identical at 310mm. Shortening the tube and replacing the wings should be feasable.

I shall have to look into that, luckily the AA-5 is smaller than the -6 which makes life easier. Just one more hurdle to overcome when making a vacform of a lesser represented aircraft :ha:

This looks like a fun build, I will enjoy watching this build as I have seen the excellent quality of your other built vac forms.

I suspect this is not a small a/c how long is the model?

My work bench is starting to look like Portsmouth Naval Dockyard.

Thanks guys for the interest  and yes this is a pretty large aircraft in 1/72. Box contents are as follows:

Main fuselage halves and nose section (note the 15cm ruler for scale):

Image

Two further sheets containing the wings, tail, undercarriage pods and further details:

A bag containing white metal seats, wheels and legs and other details:

There is also a set of typed instructions, full size 3 view drawings and former shapes. It'll take a lot of elbow grease and careful construction to get this one together. I'll also need to track down some suitable Red Stars and nose numbers but that shouldn't be a major issue. Lord knows where I'll put this one once its built but it should be an impressive sight.

You do realise you picked up an obligation to at least try to find markings for a plane that was based in Ukraine, if such a thing exists..

You've lost me on that one Rob, I often need things explaining though so that's no change ;-)

The village that became Anatevka was in Ukraine, and where else would you find a fiddler on the roof...

Aha! and the light bulb comes on :-D  I haven't seen a production of Fiddler on the Roof since I was a young boy (Dad was a stage manager for our local Operatics Society) so you'll have to excuse my ignorance.
