I'll be along SHORTly ... ** DNF ** (but still working)

The one you have all been waiting for - Vac(u)-formed kits. Any subject, any kit, so long as the basis of the kit is vac-form (no, you can't enter an injection airplane with a vac-canopy). Started kits are eligible, within reason - this is a learning GB to introduce members the variety of kits, what can be accomplished with them, and to overcome any reluctance to add them to your modeling repertoire.
This is an extended GB, running 4 April to 31 May, and your hosts are Lancfan, SJPONeill, and Splash.

I'll be along SHORTly ... ** DNF ** (but still working)

Post by JohnRatzenberger »

A bit too many things this week, to make a decision and a proper post.

I have surveyed all my vac-kits, which are about 80% 'tween wars, 15% early/WW1, and the rest.

I will be doing something 'tween wars, mostly with a "naval" theme:
-- the ugly ducklings: Atlas, Bison, Blackburn, Dart
-- the flying boats: Calcutta, Iris, London, Perth, Rangoon, Scapa, Singapore, Southampton

I suspect that a smaller model may be the best choice, as I look at my schedule over the next couple months. I have to spend some time, pulling things off shelves, double-checking condition and parts inventory - many of these kits travelled a long road to get here.

The flying boats sound nice, so do the ugly ducklings, so I imagine it will be a hard choice.

I look forward to see what ever you pick.

Well you know what I'd enjoy seeing built John ;-) but any of those subjects will make for an interesting build.

Drum Roll if you please ....

In keeping with the title of the thread, or at least one word of it ....

I have selected an aircraft from the Shorts stables ....

But not one from my original list ....

So ....

It really boiled down to being too busy these days and not having a lot of room on/near my bench - and at 1/144 this will fit nicely with a few other airliners I have in that scale.

Some of you may remember that I started a 1/72 resin kit of the S-23 but it got OBE. It's a great looking aircraft; I must get the big one done also ....

That's a great choice John  I do remember the 1/72 one you were doing way back, I think it was the CMR resin kit? At least this one will be a more manageable size.

All I have done is to outline the parts. As you can see, this is a skill not completely mastered ....

Image

Next step, before I cut parts, is to drill/cut/file out the windows. They are all small enough to fill with Kleer, but I might do the "larger" rectangular ones with clear sheet cut to shape. OTOH, I was thinking about black (better a clear blue) paint, but I saw Vacant's comment about that being unacceptable in 1/72 and didn't want to take the chance the standards might expand into 1/144

Might be a day or so before I get to it, so I might rethink .... there is nothing inside to see and I'm not adding anything to it ...

Just to show I'm not a total sloth ....

Image

I have the fuselage and 3 bulkheads cut out, but not yet sanded down. That might happen tomorrow, if the weather remains nice and I finish cleaning and organizing the porch.

Good luck with this. Welsh seem to make excellent vacs and use a good robust plastic.
