Andrew's Falcon Martin-Baker MB-5 *Finished*

The one you have all been waiting for - Vac(u)-formed kits. Any subject, any kit, so long as the basis of the kit is vac-form (no, you can't enter an injection airplane with a vac-canopy). Started kits are eligible, within reason - this is a learning GB to introduce members the variety of kits, what can be accomplished with them, and to overcome any reluctance to add them to your modeling repertoire.
This is an extended GB, running 4 April to 31 May, and your hosts are Lancfan, SJPONeill, and Splash.

Andrew's Falcon Martin-Baker MB-5 *Finished*

Post by AndrewR »

Here is my entry for the GB. Falcon Model's Martin-Baker MB-5 in 1/72 scale.

Image

I got this for peanuts on EBay

Stout plastic sheets. Some raised panel lines which might need a bit of sanding. A Falcon canopy of course.

Nice choice...while not as detailed as the Dynavector vacs, I've yet to have a Falcon vacform that was a dog or that wasn't a good basis for decent result...
Please critique my posts honestly i.e. say what you think so I can learn and improve...

Andrew,

Looking forward to see what you can do with this. Not only is the MB5 an awesome beast of a machine, I will glean all your good experience from building a vac-form!

regards,

Martin

Falcon are just so good at vac forms that it was an obvious choice to have a go at. Plus the subject itself is a fascinating "might-have-been".

A bit of early morning sanding on the fuselage halves. The fit is pretty good, the only tricky bit being the air intake underneath.

The plastic is 1 mm thick, which makes the fuselage very rigid.

Did you get it from a monkey?

Good start. This is one of those aircraft that shoulda/woulda/coulda, just like the TSR.2. A real shame it never got into service. Have you seen the website of the guy who is building an airworthy replica?

I've done a lot of sanding, so the fuselage and wings are now fitted together.

The cockpit cut out still needs to be done and some interior detail adding. I'm thinking of doing this one in flight, so a pilot will hide everything

It was peanuts when I got it. As the Canadian dollar has crashed against its US counterpart, I've had to quit buying on Ebay. Just too expensive

I'm at the point where a bit of painting will be needed.

Image

I think the cockpit will be a late-war black. The pilot comes from the Airfix Spitfire F.22 kit and the exhaust stubs from a Fujimi Spitfire XIV.

I've added side consoles, a makeshift seat and instrument panel, and a rear bulkhead. That should be enough for the cockpit!

The contra-props will be done with prop blurs, so that speeds production up enormously! The very tip of the spinner needed some putty on it, as the end had caved in. Once that is set, a bit of airbrushing will be done.

cheers

Good idea with the prop blur.
My work bench is starting to look like Portsmouth Naval Dockyard.

Primer on some bits.

The three piece spinner is pretty impressive (and is due to be painted red)!

I'm confused I thought the MB5 only had one engine but I see four in the photo.
