Andrew's Falcon Martin-Baker MB-5 *Finished*

The one you have all been waiting for - Vac(u)-formed kits. Any subject, any kit, so long as the basis of the kit is vac-form (no, you can't enter an injection airplane with a vac-canopy). Started kits are eligible, within reason - this is a learning GB to introduce members the variety of kits, what can be accomplished with them, and to overcome any reluctance to add them to your modeling repertoire.
This is an extended GB, running 4 April to 31 May, and your hosts are Lancfan, SJPONeill, and Splash.

Here's the Freightdog decals for the Spitfire Mk 21.

Image

The alternative history is that Spitfire development ends with the Mk XIV Griffon engined version. The MB-5 is brought into service because its longer range allows more tactical flexibility. The RAuxAF gets the original MB-5 (in-service name Mamba Mk-1) after the war, as jets are brought into widespread service in the RAF.

And the decalling gets done.

As usual, the Freightdog decals go on very nicely.

The exhaust manifolds need a wee bit of filler or Milliput.

I have to tackle the vac form canopy next!

Bit rough in places, and I need to work on getting thin trailing edges!
But from normal viewing distance, it's pretty good.

Gently warm the canopy first before cutting.

I didn't like the gaps between the spinner segments, so some filler has been added.

I hope to get some sanding and painting this evening.

A day off today, apart from bureaucratic stuff like renewing driving licence and health card...

So, time for the vac canopy:

Image

Monty takes it all in his stride!

Image

That was the easiest vac form canopy ever. Nice and thin, just cut out with scissors and a tiny trim with a scalpel.

Image

I may add a seat cushion, as I think the pilot is seated too low at the moment. I'm cleaning up the cockpit coaming. Then I'll add a gunsight.

The red paint on the spinner has also been touched up, but will probably need another coat.

And the spinner gets that second coat.

Canopy framing done.

A few paint touch ups on the airframe and it'll be time for varnish.

Nice to see you are thinking about the comfort of the pilot and giving him a cushion to sit on.

Comfort and a very smart looking a/c what more could the pilot want?
My work bench is starting to look like Portsmouth Naval Dockyard.
