Barry's Stinson SM 6000B Trimotor *FINISHED*

The one you have all been waiting for - Vac(u)-formed kits. Any subject, any kit, so long as the basis of the kit is vac-form (no, you can't enter an injection airplane with a vac-canopy). Started kits are eligible, within reason - this is a learning GB to introduce members the variety of kits, what can be accomplished with them, and to overcome any reluctance to add them to your modeling repertoire.
This is an extended GB, running 4 April to 31 May, and your hosts are Lancfan, SJPONeill, and Splash.

This is all the help you get

Image

Outlining the parts prior to cutting out

Image

Struts like these are not used. Replacements will be fabricated

Image

Instrument panel with wings above. Blob on the right is a wheel...it just looks weird because of the shadow.

Image

Very rough sides on the fuselage.

Image

Engines to replace the supplied blobs

Image

Surprisingly, for 1977, this kit came with decals. They look like they were actually designed for the Curtiss T-2 Condor kit though.

Yes, I have the J&L Condor and those decals definitely look very familiar. I lost mine so I can't say for certain though.

Same featureless engine blobs as the Condor too

Best of luck with it. Great choice of kit! Should look superb when finished. 1930s Trimotors always look impressive.

Fuselage showing how outlining the parts beforehand helps delineate the material to be pared away. This was done with pencil....black marker works better.

Image

I like to carve away the bulk of the excess first to minimize the amount of sanding.

Image

Ready to cut openings to install clear strips for the side windows.

Image

Window strips partially glued in....I decided to add vertical stiffeners to keep the top and bottom edges of the openings from flexing out of alignment.

Whittling a plane out of plastic I knew it, I thought Barry would eventually do it!

Here I've drawn the shape of the cockpit side windows on Tamiya tape, put it on the model, and used it as a guide to cut away the shape of the clear plastic that will go in there.

Image

for the right hand side, I used the left side 'blank' as a guide to cut the tape.

Image

Tape on the model and cut out the opening.

Image

So, now we have this. The small rectangles on the left are the windscreen panels. All of the bulkheads (Patterns taken from the instruction sheet) had to be trimmed drastically to fit. The shape of the fuselage door was way wrong (but correct on the drawing) so I'm filling it in...new door to be cut tomorrow. No issues with the wings, just lots of sanding to thin the trailing edges.
