Appearances (or lack thereof) to the contrary, occasional bouts of modelling have occurred in the near past. The airframe joints have been filled (I hate that job), sanded and generally made good. I have applied several thickish coats of Halford's white primer to form the white of the invasion stripes, and have finally manned up to mask them off. Three coats of Xtracrylix night black have now been daubed on; a couple more to do, methinks.

Painting should have begun at least by the end of this GB.

OK, invasion stripes are complete; put on some sky and DSG in various isolated places. Need to do some 'levelling' of the paint finish at the boundaries between primed / masked areas. Also, added a crew door and dinghy hatch from wine bottle foil.

Hopefully, more progress tomorrow.

How do you 'level' your paint between masked areas? On my recent Me 110 I did get some pretty obvious demarcation lines between colours, but I didn't want to attack the surface with wet and dry for fear of ruining the work already done.

Hi Nigel,

For small shallow areas, I'd probably use a correction pen (if I had one), sanding back when dry. As I don't, I think I'll use fine grade sanding sticks to at least get rid of the 'sharp' demarkation between the edges where I've had tape holding the masking in place and primed areas.

For a general smoothing / polishing of rough raised edges (eg like I'm almost certain to have between the white and black of the invasion stripes), I use a micromesh cloth of about 4000 grit. The paint needs to be cured and I need to to use a bit of finesse also (!). When doing this, the paint can look a bit scuffed and discoloured. However, this appears to be a surface effect (unless I inadvertently polish through the paint as it usually disappears under a coat of Future.

Any use?

Martin

Here's where I got to last night (ish):

And for Nigel, here's how the 'levelling' ended up after some sanding stick action. I can no longer feel a 'bump' when I rub my fingertip across the edges, so I think this should do:

Very useful thank you Martin for taking the time and pics. The finest grade of paper I have is 400 so I'll have to get some finer stuff.

Thank you, chaps. Took a night off last night and watched "Theory of Everything" with my wife. Great film!

I have attended to a couple of seams on the underside that weren't quite right. I'll touch that up tonight along with any further greeblies and, if I have time, get some klear and maybe some decals on. That's probably as far as I'll get by GB's end, but it's further on than I thought I'd be a week ago!

Thanks, Stuart.

Exhausts dry-brushed brown over the gunmetal, undercarriage door outers in sky, greeblies eliminated, seams polished and klear being applied. Decals - and hopefully pics - tomorrow.
