despondman's Hawker Hurricane MkIIB **Finished**

Post by despondman »

I am going to build a Hawker Hurricane MkIIB. This is a 1975 rebox of a 1972 tooling.
I am going to do the green/dark grey/med grey camo of AE-K.

What is it with you and Hurricanes? This will be 4 in 2 months!! I'm not objecting or criticizing, just curious about your love affair with Camm's beautiful and effective fighter.

And I also built 2 in February's What-If GB! I just really like the Hurricane. Last year I just happened to pick up quite a few cheaply at model shows etc, and decided I'd try and build a few of them during this year, but I wanted to build a range of different makes, marks and markings (buying some after market decals to do so). It just so happens that GB's have fallen in a way that that has helped me achieve this. So it was What-ifs in February, Lesser Forces last month (fortunately both straight OOB), Classic and Hurricane GBs this month. And they are all different in some way – in fact that is why I chose the AZ Models kit for the Hurri GB, the aluminium finish is so different to the usual colour schemes. I might also do a Revell MkII in the Hurri GB if I have time in SEAC markings OOB or after market decals. And with Hurris lined up for the Heller, BoB and Naval Air GBs and a nice Frog Hurri for blitzing there are more to come. I am even contemplating a training Hurri conversion for the Training Aircraft GB.

Oh and of course and as Daz says:

The parts are a silvery grey colour, which doesn't really show in the photos. Whilst badged as a Mk IIB the kit also contains the Anti-Tank Cannon to make a MkIID, and the Rockets to make a MkIV. Quite fancy the Anti-Tank Cannon as I have never done them on a Hurricane before. There is also a stand which I am very tempted to use.

It looks a nice kit - similer engineering to the old tool mk.I kit - I might have to get few.

It's a shame there's no Volkes filter included

I'd advise AM decals - Airfix ones of that vintage are well dodgy!

When I peeled the protective paper off them I wondered how good they would be. I might actually give them a coat or two of Microscale Liquid Decal Film and give them a try, if that fails I will either use the AE-K decals from a more recent boxing, or decals from the Revel MkIIB in which case it will become AE-W, or some Sky Models Decals in which case it will become AE-Q. The latter also has Soviet decals for a MkIIB which is very tempting - I do not have a Soviet Hurricane.

Here is progress so far. A fairly rudimentary cockpit as one would expect. I have used the pilot figure as I have decided to use the stand as it is included and do this wheels up.

This kit is a joy to build. The fuselage is now together and the wings almost complete. Obviously doing it wheels up makes the build very easy.

Didn't Mk11s serve in the battle of Malta? Plenty of decals for that. Lovely work so far

A quick update as this is a straight forward build. Not a big issue bit I have had to cut a bit out of the radiator so I can use the stand because the radiator is in the way of using the stand otherwise. Painting next.
