Splash's 0-6-0 class 04 Shunter ***Finished***
This years CBK display is going to be railway orientated so I'm going to build the little 0-6-0 diesel Shunter as part of the display.
Today I obtained the Dapol re issue of the old Airfix / Kitmaster kit along with a couple of the old rolling stock.
The Shunter is small and should not take long to build the hardest part will be the painting as they tended to have stripy fronts and rears

Black decal stripes over yellow paint might do it.

That's my first thought for colours but it might finish up black or green, depending on how the Humbral acrylic paint spraysSir T wrote:BR Blue with Yellow/Black Stripes? Love it!

The parts count is surprisingly high for such a old and small kit and so is the lack of flash

That looks really good - I have to admit that I didn't know you could buy locomotive kits so seeing one is a nice surprise!

Ooh. A loco. Lots and lots of weathering possibilities. Nice choice.

Airfix re issued most of the Kitmaster steam engines and railway rolling stock back in the 60's and the moulds were sold off to DAPOL who still sell the same kits under their own brand.Sir T wrote:That looks really good - I have to admit that I didn't know you could buy locomotive kits so seeing one is a nice surprise!
Airfix did I think about 11 railway engines ranging from the first successful engine the Rocket to the 9F Evening Star that was the last of the British steam Engines in service. All of these are still available and cost between £6 and £12. They also did a large range of buildings like the Pub that Chis is building and rolling stock and track side accessories.
For their age they are not bad kits and can be a cheap way to fill a railway display with parked up engines and as Toby says "Lots and lots of weathering possibilities" you can't over weather a train as they got filthy.

Possibly more than you wanted to know, but the Drewry Shunter you have there is the only one of the range that actually originated with Airfix. It was never a Kitmaster mould. It didn't last long, coming out in 1961 and lasting until 1967. All this and more fascinating trivia in "Let's Stick Together Again"...

You lucky jammy what-not!! You have got a relatively clean moulding there to work with. I've just spent a good while cleaning up the pub window frames etc, and have now got George Formby lyrics going round in my head

Re: Splash's 0-6-0 class 04 Shunter
DAPOL state they use recycled plastic. On this kit it's a nice light grey colour of slightly soft plastic that is easy to work with.
The detail is crisp with only slight flash on some of the ejection pin marks. I have assembled the main body with the wheels just pushed into place, I plan to remove the hand rails on the cab and replace them with brass rods, so the cab will be build later.

Looks like a nicely detailed kit. Interesting that they use recycled plastic.

To try and improve the detail I'm removing the solid bars representing the hand rails and replacing them with bent wire.
